1957 dodge hydrovac ? brake system

1957 dodge hydrovac ? brake system - 11/05/14 11:40 PM

57 dodge school bus with this system. A woman has it & there's a brake issue. I believe she said "hydrovac". What is this system & how does it operate. There are fringe benefits at stake . Thank you for your time (& help).

I do not know if it is a diesel or not but I'm thinking not but I ain't sure. SC thank you for the (informative) link. I'll go thru/study it. EDIT Pic added

If it looks like the link provided, "Hydrovac" is indeed what it is. They are simple, really. Think of it as a power brake unit. The unit has a brake line going IN from the original master, which activates the unit in place of a push rod. The vacuum boosts it, and feeds boosted pressure out

These were used and added to many older trucks, even pickups

Ha! i'm sure between the 2 of us we could make a complete mess of a brake system neither of us ever heard of! it'll be a Fred Flintstone bus!

This allows the smaller foot operated master cylinder to operate the large capacity master with reasonable foot pressure.Basically like a hydraulic clutch works,minus the vacuum assist!On the smaller trucks I think it may have been done for space issues too as the vac booster is remotely mounted on the frame and out of the engine compartment.My '69 L600 is like this,but I don't like the single pot master supplying the booster!
