66 GTX ?

66 GTX ? - 10/30/14 08:19 AM

Just came across an ad on e-bag for a completely restored, one owner 66 GTX, 440 auto. I've always been told that 67 was the first year for the 440 in anything other than a C-body and the first year for GTX. Am I mistaken or is this guy blowing smoke?

1967 was the first year for the GTX & the first year for a 440 powered b-body.

...but if they are strictly looking at date codes associated with the car, its entirely possible for a '67 to be built in the later half of '66.

Some people don't understand the specifics of model year vs calendar year so they may use the calendar dates instead of model dates.

Definitely blowing smoke. The vin shows it as a 273 car. As far as his description of "excellent condition", "fully restored" and "one owner"... well, you take a look and see if you agree.

it HAS to be a GTX! he's the original owner and the red tail stripe clearly states "Plymouth GTX"!

Too many flim flam men out there..67 was the first year for GTX and R/T, in regards to the GTX if the vin isn't RS23 for a hardtop or RS27 for convertible....it's not a GTX. Car came standard with a 440 and the hemi being the only motor option

Actually the red tail stripe says Plymouth 440 not GTX.

Cut him some slack, guys!

It has the ultra rare 726 TRANS! That has got to count for something ... restoring one of those is no piece of pie!

Only date that counts is the year on the title.

"Possible".... to say the least since 67 production started in August of 1966.

As mentioned, the 1967 Model year was the first for the GTX, the simple answer to what he has is the VIN# which would have to start with either RS23J7 (Hemi) or RS23L7 (440).

Very possible..back then changeover could last one or two months from the previous model year. Some years it started in August some September, based on sales and the difficulty to change to the next model year....I loved it because we all got laid off for the summer..But sorry no 66Xs were built..
Put it right next to the 1970 Daytona, The 72 hemi cuda, The 67 road runner, and the 71 Superbird..

I noticed the guy added to his post that it is indeed an original 273 car and was built as a GTX tribute car. I'll bet he got a lot of flak for the original post.

That car's a mess. Looks to be in good shape, but its a miss-match of parts and ideas from all over the map.
