Dana 60 ?? - 10/08/14 04:00 PM

I'm looking ata a Dana that's for sale and the guy says its out of a truck but the thing has a pinion snubber. I was under the impression truck Dana's only had the pad but weren't drilled and did not have snubbers attached.

That will be out of a car originally. It may have gotten under a truck at some point but only car rears had the pinion snubber.
Look for the BOM build of material number on the passenger side tube.
It should be a few inches out from the center section. Will be similar in forum of 602957-1 and should have some dates.
That BOM number will tell you what you need to know about the rear and how it was built from the factory.

The higher ratio gearsets shown in the table of BoM numbers may be Pro-Stock applications. Also, the application years shown seem to be calendar year, not model year (there were no '69 E bodies).

Axle shaft dimensions vary in Dana 60 axles. Dimensions of semi- floating (passenger car type) axles shafts are shown below. Shaft lengths are measured from the outer flange face to the inboard end of the shaft. Note that the right axle shaft is always shorter than the left, so unlike the Chrysler 8 3/4" axle, Dana 60 axle shafts will not interchange side-to-side.

BoM Dia.-splines L shaft R shaft

The truck dana 60 housing are just round across the top of the pinion.

Re: Dana 60 ?? - 10/08/14 04:32 PM

guess i must have been having one of those dreams where i cut the truck axle ends off and welded on the passenger car ends to make a E body size dana 60.....

Re: Dana 60 ?? - 10/08/14 04:54 PM

Apparently it's a "non posi" rear end. With no more info, what do you think its worth ??

Re: Dana 60 ?? - 10/08/14 05:32 PM

There was a guy at a Mopar show 10 or so years ago selling a full floater Dana housing with the snubber mount. He said that when Danas were no longer used in cars after '72 they used up the center castings by putting them in trucks. IIRC this one was out of a 1 ton B-series box van

I am in no way saying that it could have never happened, I am just saying what is most case situations.

Overall length will determine the value. If it could be used as is in an A,B, or E body the value goes up. If it will need cut down, new ends, and new axles for your application that will hurt it.
If the housing and axles are drop in ready length wise you can pick up a power lock unit and a set of gears. Just depends on what is there as far as value goes. I have seen the cast center sections with the pinion snubber mounts go for a couple hundred dollars.
Add to that the more items that are there.
Or that's my

i was told the same thing by my elderly chrysler guru---he said when something got dumped it was sent out ----he said when 426 wedge sales fell--they were restamped 413 and tossed into newports---when 8 3/4 was ended they went out in slant six 3 speed valiants and darts---they didnt want to keep inventory items that were old news....

I can relate to that last bit about 8.75" in Valiants. I bought a new Valiant Scamp Hardtop in 1971 with a 225/727/8.75" drive line, I wish I still had it. It was a great commuter car.

As to what a Dana 60 is worth, it depends on what you want it for. If original numbers and pinion snubbers are important then whatever the market will bear. If you want to race, then the big tube truck rears are where you begin and I can find them anywhere for $150.00 and up depending on the carrier.

BTW the center sections are cast steel not cast iron and I weld them to the tubes with 7013 rod. Then the tubes don't move and leak gear oil.

Great piece to narrow. I would say $200 especially if it has the gears you want.

The picture you posted is definitely a Mopar passenger car Dana 60.

That's what I was thinking Doc, the brake backing plates and axles look like Pass car stuff to me. I would hope Stanton has picked it up by now.

How can you tell from the photo? Truck axles would normally narrow down towards the ends and that can't be seen under the bags.

Re: Dana 60 ?? - 10/09/14 04:02 AM

1. Second generation passenger car pinion snubber attached with correct bolts

2. Passenger car E-brake cable anchor welded in the correct location

3. Passenger car brakes

Even the rare Dana 60 truck housing built with a pinion snubber casting, does not have these 3 features.

I doubt many here know as much about rear ends as the Dr.Rocky

Re: Dana 60 ?? - 10/09/14 04:39 PM

I appreciate all the help. This think is all the way at the other end of the country so looking at it is out of the question. I've fired off a bunch of questions based on the info you guys have provided. If it pans out I can have this thing on my doorstep for about $350 including shipping. The only puzzling thing is the "non-posi" statement. You'd think that even if the rear had blown it would have been replaced with the same unit - the gears are 4.11's so they're likely stock!

Re: Dana 60 ?? - 10/09/14 06:27 PM

I would buy all the dana 60's I could get as pictured in your original post for $350.00 at my door. You might ask for a picture with the inspection cover off to get a better idea of what is inside if possible. But it being a car unit the housing and axles are worth well more than the $350.00 so I would get the deal done and take a chance on it.

Probably a trac loc, they don't really look like a Sure Grip. If it's on this side of the country and you don't want it let me know the info please and I'll pick it up.

I bought the Dana 60-2 that I narrowed for my D100 for $400.00 in 2010. It had been rebuilt with a PowerLock carrier. 4.10 gears, 35 spline axles, set 7 Timken tapered bearings, 12" drum brakes with 5 on 5.5" pattern (all stock). Since then, I took it all apart and I welded the tubes to the case. Then I had one tube and axle shortened 6" and the axle resplined by a 4x4 shop that jig welded it back together for $400.00. I put it back together with new seals and a new 1310 yoke for another $200.00 in parts. This gives me a Dana 60 that fits my truck (with 16" wheels) with the best OEM LSD carrier and a desirable gear set. It is also the right size to fit an A-body (with 16" wheels, 5 on 5.5" pattern)

I have yet to install it in the truck...I keep waiting for the 8.25" to give up

A Dana 60-2 is found in Jeep Gladiator pickups. There was one wasting away in my old neighborhood in Kirkland and there is one for sale in Graham right now. They are out there

Re: Dana 60 ?? - 10/10/14 09:46 PM

66-72 F-100s also had Dana 60s as an option if a locking diff was wanted. 5 on 5 1/2" and power lock, (or trac loc) but no snubber.
