I purchased a used scattersheild and found the center hole to be to small. I know that the later trannys like mine have a bigger front bearing mount. Is it possible to just change the mount or can I just turn my mount down to fit? or is openning the hole in the sheild the best way to go? Thanks for help.

Forget opening the hole in the shield unless you have access to a milling machine. The hole is precision made so the bellhousing can be indexed to the crank.

I don't see why you couldn't turn down your bearing retainer as long as the bolt pattern is small enough so as not to be compromised.

If that won't work and you're stuck, I have some spare cases - both a cast iron and an aluminum one. Just swap all but the retainer into an older case.

Also, don't EVER put a scattershield on without checking that it's square, etc. There are plenty of tutorials on how to do this, but basically you need a dial indicator, mount on the flywheel so you can indicate the hole is concentric/ centered, and indicate on the trans mount surface to be sure it's square with the block, and then of course indicate on the flywheel itself to check runout

How to align a lakewood shield...click the attachment.

IIRC there are two lakewood shields for the big block mopar. I think one has a bigger hole....have to check on that.

He would need a lathe to turn the retainer down, so whats the difference if he needed a mill to open the hole?

I would take it to a machine shop and have the hole opened. Tell the shop it must be centered exactly as the old hole was. Then use the lakewood offset dowels to center everything up, (youll likely need to do that regardless of the hole problem) as outlined in the pdf file I attached im my previous post.

Yeah there are two,

15330 has a 4.807 opening and 15335 has a 5.125 opening.
