Holley adjustments issues - 09/25/14 05:11 AM

Hi all,

I am putting a 750 double pumper on my 440 and I am having issues. I have a large amount of gas squirting out the top of the carb.. I swear it is squirting out of the float adjustment bolt on top, floats are good and just a trickle out of the sight holes so I think floats are adjusted right...

Am I missing something ?Do you have to really crank on those top bolts to stop it leaking, I don't want to do damage

Thanks in advance.

there's a thin gasket on either side of the hex nut (1 gasket on the bottom between hex nut and carb body/1 gasket on top between hex nut and the lock screw)

Thanks Robert,

Do they dry out or go bad?

I think they deteriorate over time like happens to other gaskets on occaision plus on these adjusting the float level is gonna disturb em will which will add up over time

Have you ever removed the float bowls?
I had a holly 750 that I bought used and had the same problem. It turned out the plating on the inside of the carb was peeling off the inside of the carb, I think the term holly used was diechrome plating?
Anyways I contacted holly and even though the carb was 20yrs old they sent me a Brand new carb, no charge.
It would pay to pull the bowls if you haven't and check it out.

make sure the o-ring on the needle/seat is not out of its bore. to high/to low can let fuel past o-ring and blow out adjusting screw/nut.

you get the new felt/paper washers in a rebuild kit or upgrade to the nylon washers.

I had a bowl gasket split/cut/break and leak fuel on the top side of bowl.

when was the last time it got a fresh kit in it?

50 bux well spent. I found my PV blown/transfer tube O-rings flat.
and new gaskets sealed the leaks up. no wonder it was pig rich at idle.

if you use the felt/paper gasket it helps to coat them with vasline to keep them soft/non-stick. helps the O-rings seal/slide in the bore with out sticking over time.

X2 what Scratchn said: lube the O rings on the needle/seat assy before install & in fact I suspect that is where your leak is coming from rather than the 2 flat gaskets on the hex nut

Along with the other things mentioned, if a gorilla tightens the slotted screw on top of the hex adjuster the threads in the bowl can be stripped out.

Just an FYI its real easy to do. I swear the hard nylon gaskets make it a little worse. They seem to need tightened more than the ones made from gasket material.
