Tire size

Tire size - 09/23/14 03:45 AM

I currently have a Mickey Thompson L series on the rear of my 72 Cuda and I plan to get some new tires over the winter. 275 60.15 was the plan until this past weekend. A guy that I met has 255 70.15 and I like the look of the slightly narrower tire. His tires run around 10" width verses my almost 11". His tires are 29" tall vs my 28".

Anybody else running this tire size on the rear of your E body.

Also, with a 3.91 rear gear what would a 29" tire roughly bring the effective rear ratio to?

I know from rpm calculators that I would drop about 100 or so rpm with the taller tire.

Thanks

My RPM chart shows a 3.91 with a 29 inch tire about the same as a 3.73 with a 28 inch tire. when you talk about width are you thinking tread width or section width? I run 275 on my AAR with 3.91s and I am pleased with them.

The tire size calculator that I used described section width, I thought that was another term for tread width. At any rate, the tires on the orange car are narrower and I kinda like it.

The M/T Ls are supposed to be a 275.60 but they look wider when I compare them to pictures of cars with the metric tire. I DO have rubbing problems with the M/Ts on an 8" rim.

Section width is the width of the body of the tire, the bulge if you would, generally it is 1.5-2.0 wider than the thread. I am assuming you have L60s which are wider than the 275s, probably closer to a 295 but I don't know of a 295 60, there is still a 295 65 but it is tall and wide and looks really awesome on 68-69 B bodies. Rim back space would be the key to making them work on an E body. I have a 255 70 15 on a rim on an S-10 chassis I have and I cant really see it on a car, not sure it would look right.

I like your 70 series idea. Most people look at tire width, but the height is what makes or breaks the look.

OK, that does explain a lot. I had been told that my L60 was a 275. We'll see but I will probably still go with a 275. The guys had those tires laying around and used them on the orange Cuda to get it on the road.

The black Cuda above is mine with the Mickey's.

I was trying to come up with the same angle but this is the best I could do.
