epoxy primer? - 09/17/14 07:19 PM

okay guys i stripped my car down to bare metal know hopefully in the next week or so i will spray the car in primer heres my question do i have to put primer sealer on right away.Or can it wait a few weeks because i do have to put some filler on the car in a few spots. When you work 60 hours a week theres some days i just dont get out in the shop to work on it as much as id like too. Also what the best thing to wipe the car down with before i spray my cat its pretty much 95 percent bare metal at the moment.

that was my plan, then should I do another layer of primer over filler so it would be epoxy primer do my filler then maybe more epoxy primer.

filler sticks fine to epoxy primer, epoxy prime do body work and then epoxy again to seal in bondo. Then prime paint.

Exactly, regular epoxy primer first, then bondo and body work. Then you mix the epoxy primer with more/slower reducer in it and seal your body work. Then 2K primer over that and you block sand with the 2K primer. Then you you seal the 2K primer with epoxy mixed as a sealer again right before color.

FYI, there are direct to metal fillers.

I use the Evercoat Quantum One and will pass the 500 hr salt spray test. No need to epoxy prime first, it is fortified with epoxy.

I agree epoxy first. Then filler ( I just can't call it bondo lol ) Then epoxy over that again

One needs epoxy between filler and 2K primer?

can seam sealer be applied over epoxy primer???

Re: epoxy primer? - 09/19/14 04:01 PM

I always go epoxy first. I've stripped putty/regular primer off cars many times and they almost always have rust under both. Neither will seal the metal like epoxy or etch primer. It doesn't have to be expensive either, I use kirker I get labeled as summit or eastwood for under 100 for 2 sprayable gallons.

Most epoxy primers I have used require an etch primer first as they are not DTM primers. Check the tech sheets for whichever brand you use to see if its necessary.

This is completely irrelevant to this post, but what do brand new cars have on them from the factory? How many coats and of what exactly?
