Engine Balance question -440 External balance - 09/17/14 04:56 AM

I have a good running 440 I screwed together years ago, its a 77 block, with l2266f .030 pistons. So when I first got that motor I used it with a stock 440 truck flywheel, then I rebuilt it, and the machine shop balanced it with the flywheel, and they drilled the flywheel in a couple of spots to correct the balance with the l2266f pistons.
So now I want to move that motor to my 77 Ramcharger, that is automatic, is there a way to match some converter weights to what was done to the flywheel?

don't quote me but I think the fluid in the converter will be the balance. I would call a good trans shop like monster transmision.

Is the machine shop still there? Maybe they can spin the flywheel up and see how much weight and where would be needed either on a flex plate so you can use a neutral convertor or right on the convertor?

Get a B&M flexplate and have the machine shop balance it the same as the flywheel, then use a neutral balance convertor.

The machine shop that did the work originally is long gone.. I stopped into an another shop and asked if they could balance the flexplate, they are saying they need to knock the motor apart and rebalance the whole thing. If thats the case, I probably wouldnt put it back together with the l2266f's. I'll try another shop tomorrow.

The second shop is correct. Without knowing the original bob- weight used for the balance there's no way they can correctly balance it without taking it apart to get the actual weights.

I agree.
There should be enough material in the B&M plate to drill enough holes to achieve the same off balance as the flywheel.

I have a solution for this, I had exactly the same problem with a 360 in my 70 Cuda. You can find the thread if you click my username.
Put the flywheel up in a wheel balancing machine and you will find out how much and where it has been balanced. Weld the same weight on the opposite side (180 degrees) on your zero balanced converter and you will be fine.

It is important that you have about the same distance from the center, so measure the converter first so you know what distance you should use when you put the weights on when you zero balance your flywheel. Good luck

I agree.

Does this thing still have the the 6 pak rods in it?

Any chance the shop was just correcting the flywheel to zero?

Ext bal isn't for six pack rods, it's a '77 cast crank motor.
I assume the pistons are lighter than OEM and the shop removed weight from the flywheel to make up for it.

The wheel balancer idea won't work. It only will tell you the degree angle and how much weight to add, you also need to know how far from the crank centerline to place it.
