1967 superstock intake vanke mod

1967 superstock intake vanke mod - 08/24/14 05:47 PM

Just bought this intake. The guy I bought it from stated it was from a superstock car 1966-67. According to the numbers it is an early manifold with CDPC instead of the pentastar. The walls are cut out that looks factory. The book I have states "wall cut" for superstock. So to me it appears real. There is a piece of aluminum welded in. I did some research and it is the Arlen Vanke mod I guess alot of people did for more power at the track. So this is the manifold that would have came on the WO and RO23 cars. Would the factory have welded that little damn of aluminum in? I took off the underside heat shield and found aluminum foil jammed in there. I unwrappped one of the pieces and found what I think is espestos. Not sure. But I am guessing it would have been to keep the heat away for a cooler airfuel mixture. Also what is that big plug for on the underside of the intake? I included some pictures.

Also what does WBAC And M1 mean on the front of the manifold? And here is a picture of some numbers on the back. Any meaning for these also?

What you have there is a late '66, early '67 manifold. Did that version come on the RO/WO cars. I don't know. The manifold transition occurred sometime in '67 but I don't know when, maybe somebody else does. I do not know the significance of the number that is in the small block on the rear of the manifold and I have never heard of anyone that does.

That is as stated a late 66/early 67 piece. Parts were randomly taken from inventory, there was no set changeover date. That said I've owned 3 67 Hemi cars with their original intakes, two were late November 66 SPD cars, one was a late October 66 SPD, all 3 were St. Louis cars and had the later style Pentastar intake, and I'd bet that most other 67's after November 66 had them as well. That's not to say an older one wasn't used later, it's just less likely, especially as late as the spring of 67 when the R0/W0 cars were first built. I've never seen the foil insulation under a Hemi intake, just a similar style in street/production line big block valley pans. Interesting piece.

This is an intake that I got when i bought a 67 RO/WO Hemi engine years ago. I sold the block to hemi joel on the board years ago, but still have the intake.

Foundry marks. The same WBAC could be found on other similar vintage intakes and cast parts (1965 Hemi cross rams for instance). Some numbers are dates, shift information, and material type (metal type/grade, etc.). I haven't seen any data that will take you much further on those markings.

It looks like aluminum. How could one tell if it would be Magnesium? I paid $400 for it. I will probably hold on to it and maybe build a Hemi one day.

I've never seen a magnesium Street Hemi intake, only cross rams and some NASCAR single 4 versions). If one were to exist it would be MUCH lighter in weight than an aluminum version. An aluminum intake weighs roughly 26lbs with the throttle return spring brackets, throttle cable bracket, intake bolts, and oil shield in place.

I believe all in-lines were aluminum. Some Race Hemi cross rams came in Magneseum.

The dam is proper. I thought both of the ones I had were no pentstar.
