what alternator - 08/17/14 12:50 AM

working on a 1971 cuda with a 431 stroked 383, it has MSD, holley red electric pump, classic air just installed and dual electric fans. The problem is running the air, it drains the battery dead.
Not sure what amp alternator i need, but i know it has to be more than the 60 amp unit thats on it now.

I have read good stuff about these:

http://www.qualitypowerauto.com/catalog.php?category=4

and these:

http://www.tuffstuffperformance.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=results/category_id=175/mode=cat/cat175.htm

But you can also find a stock replacement from 80s alternators ( 78 amps ) on the cheap and available at many parts shops

Consider wiring upgrades

Tuff Stuff makes a really nice OEM replacement black powder coated 100 amp that works real well

The dual electric fans + AC are a "game changer". You need an alternator that has very good idle output (~80 amps) and can handle high load factors. None of the stock looking squareback derivatives even those rated 100 amps can do it. Max idle output on those is 50'ish amps.

Alternators I know of that can are the 140 and 200 amp Powermaster Delco based units, The 120 amp Denso and the big 100 amp Chrysler unit mentioned above.

"With AC" has different alternator brackets that make it harder to fit a non standard alternator. The Powermaster Chrysler adapted Delco's will mount in OE brackets but are a tight fit at the back vs the head. I tried one with Ed heads and no go. Maybe it would work with OE heads.

The Denso would take some degree of bracket modification.

For all of the above reasons, I went with the big heavy 100 amp Chrysler unit with brackets from my core '78 Cordoba engine (70E BB).

Good luck!

That Quality Power alternator looks interesting. Should fit where a squareback goes. Just have to double check depth of the case.

HMMM... Does anybody have experience with that unit?

I started a post about the Quality Power units ( the billet ones) and someone on here had purchased one but has never reported back on again on how it worked..

What most people on here fail to ever talk about is the VERY low amps output at Idle with the stock Alternators....
