I know this subject has been covered in detail in the past. I read some of the archive posts but I guess im still not sure which way to go with this. I have a street car with the battery in the trunk. It has a 2 field alternator on it. I have a 2 post disconnect switch but I am not opposed to getting the 4 wire if thats the better and safer alternative. My question is whats the best way and safest way to hook the switch up. As I said it is a street car and sees minimal track time. Thanks

Post all you want bro, there is no limit here & if a post is redundant & someone has seen it before (or several times) they can choose to move on to the next post. More info on how you are wired. I believe the NHRA wants the main switch visible thru the rear so it can be switched off. If it meets their rules I would put it in series between the batt neg post and the nearby ground in the big cable. I run the positive cable directly from the batt positive post to the starter large lug (hot all the time) & some run it from the batt positive post to a nearby furd type continuious duty solenoid then from the solenoid forward to the starter. switched 12V to the solenoid energizes it then from the starter relay (buss) you can switch it further as needed

So its acceptable to the nhra to put the switch in the negative cable? I was under the impression after reading the other links they wanted it in the positive. Although looking back at those links they are from a few years ago

nhra requires the positive cable as the switched one.

The key to making this thing shut off the car is taking the output of the alternator and running it back to the battery, positive post. Gotta be a 8 or 10 gage wire, but unless you put the output of the alternator thru a relay, solenoid etcetera it will run on when you shut off your switch. Now, I would also put a big fuse or marine circuit breaker on that line in case it gets shorted (DAMHIK). Good luck!
