99 Ram engine warning light on

99 Ram engine warning light on - 07/23/14 12:51 AM

Went to advance auto and they said cylinder #1 is misfiring. I am thinking injector as I don't see how it would know if wires or plugs bad. Will be changing wires anyway as they look like they need changing. Any one have some insight?

The PCM in your truck has a misfire monitor that recognizes misfires. Misfires can be caused by lots of things. An injector would however probably be at the bottom of my list. You can check it along with the plug and plugwire from that cylinder realitivly easily though. You can move them one at a time to a different cylinder and see if the misfire follows. My experience with Mag engines of that era tend to have clyinder head issues though. I'd do a compression test to see if all of the cylinders are equal to make sure there is not a valve sealing problem. Also pay close attention to the spark plug out of the #1 cylinder compared to the rest of them. Look for traces of coolant on the plug and overall conditon. The mag motors are prone to cylinder head cracking, especially on the end cylinders.

Yeah the code just tells you the cyl is misfiring. Its typically wires or plugs. They also have problems with the plenimum gaskets. It squishes out and sucks oil.Just did one on the 99 Durango.Guessing as to what it is can cost a lot unless you get luck with a bad plug or wires.Could also be cap and or rotor.Rocky

Yep, start with the easy stuff first. Look at the plug first. How old are they??

Go from Plug, plug wire, coil, then injector. Does the 99 ram even have a rotor. The chevys and fords dont of that era.

Im a mopar guy but have never worked on the 99 mopar stuff. Lots of chevys and fords. Fords are COP coil over plug,no wire, chevys have a coil for each cyl plus a wire.

Like said, the pute just detects a misfire, could be a number of things. Start with the easy stuff.

Problem found. The electrode is gone from number one sparkplug ! I have never seen this any ideas why? Will try to vacuum debris out tomorrow. Plugs are borscht platinums.

Thats your first problem Bosch plugs. In 30 years as a mechanic I saw one car that ran good with them.I probally replaced a few thousand because they ran like s--t.Use Champions or NGKs or Autolites.I run NGKs now in everything.Yeah one person in 200 might say Boschs run Ok.But they need to bet the lottery.Rocky

Could be as simple as Old plugs. Or lean on that cylinder from a slightly plugged injector.

But, ive seen that on two motors that havent had the plugs changed until 120000 miles. The electrodes were nearly all burnt off on alot of the plugs, not just one. trucks still ran but with a occasional miss when damp out.

Time to change all of your plugs. If plugs had low miles on them, injector IMO. So just how old are your plugs in this ride??

Like I said.Toss the Boschs in the trash and get some good plugs. Most parts stores push them because they get/or did get a kickback from Bosch for selling their garbage.Rocky

Horse Pucky...Champions!, now that's junk, I'd buy NGK's if nothing else was in stock, I just tuned up one of my DD's a 99 Ram, Bosch plugs/wires on it with 7 years, 90,000 miles on the last set of plugs, the trucks a beater and treated as such, the new set of Bosch platniums/wires should last another 100K

We've been down this slippery slope before about Bosch Platniums,..I run NOTHING but Bosch Platniums in the DD's and the toys, from SmBlks to BBlks to HEMIs....I couldn't fathom the number of fouled Champions/Autolites/NGK's I've pulled from vehicles in over 40 years of wrenching...

The OP most likely needs to freshen up any ignition components that have been neglected over time, perhaps something as simple as a wire set?

New plugs wires cap and rotor. Time will tell.

Dayclona like I said if they run good go buy Lotto tickets. You are one of the blessed and lucky ones.I was a tech for 30 years.I pulled thousands of Boschs because they ran like s--t and caused misfires etc.Ill have you talk to my buddy that put a set in his Buick.Eight bucks a plug and had a bad miss and ran like crap.New ACs and it still runs great today.30 years I had one car that ran good with them.Let alone put them on a scope and watch the patterns and firing voltages.Rocky

Hopefully you installed quality components, as a lot of "valuecraft" or "economy" brand tune up parts are just pure crap nowadays

Just did the cap and rotor on my kids 99 Durango.I bought it with 19K and now close to 100.We did the intake last week.Used Standard cap and rotor. The OE ones were still decent. Its easy to change them when the intake is off.I hope you used a dab on antisieze on the cap screws and diaelectric on the terminals.Rocky
