What Amp Alternator?

What Amp Alternator? - 07/17/14 10:31 PM

I'm need recommendations for a one wire Alternator going in 68 Charger. I will be using MSD Atomic Fuel injection and relays to run headlights off of the battery. Will I need a 60 amp or should I go with a 75 amp or higher?

Thanks in advance

I put a Tuff Stuff OEM replacement 100 amp alternator on my street and strip Duster due to the current draw of the race fuel pump and MSD 7 sereis ignition and so on. I figure it is way better to have alternator that will have room for future growth if I decided to add other electric parts onto the system later. I bought a 100 amp Powermaster single wire GM type for my race car, I ran a #8 wire form the alternator directly back to the + side of the battery and added a analog Volt meter inside to make sure it was charging while running The race car has a electric water pump, electric fan, electric fuel pump, race ignition, electric delay box, two big batterys and so on The race car has none of the original wiring so it was simple to add that #8 wire to the battery

Thanks,

I was looking on Summit and Tuff Stuff was one of the manufacturers i was considering. I had read that some ignition and fuel systems had problems if the voltage dropped too low.

If you have an atomic efi I would use a delco alt from powermaster.
About 94 amps at idle max and 140amps highway. If you have and electric fuel pump, fan, A/C you need the extra cushion.

Thanks,
That will work. Can I use the original brackets with this alternator or do I have too modify anything?

I used brackets from http://bouchillonperformance.com/inc/sdetail/467/571
Their kit uses the stock brackets.
Stock brackets work with a different spacer.

I didn't use the belt routing that they show. I have the a/c belt going directly to the crank pulley and the water pump and power steering sharing the same belt instead of the way they show.

By the way, I'm also using the atomic msd so if you need any tips I might be able to help you.

Thanks again. It's good too know that I'm not the only one using the atomic setup. I know a lot of Chevy Corvettes and Ford Mustangs that have been converted. I have high expectations for system on my Charger , hopefully It all works well.

If U are going to up the alternator capability, suggest U go through the entire electrical system...
The Mopar 68 OE system uses connectors, terminals that can only handle 25-35 AMPS @ max. One of the 1st areas needing upgrading are the bulkhead connectors, also revise the AMP guage to one for Voltage..

Think through the entire electrical system, are U going to be adding other higher current draw accessories such as electronics, subwoofer amplifier, electric fans.

Just my $0.05...

Good Thought!

I went though everything except the amp gauge. I plan to use relays where I can.

Thanks

Here's a good read about amp gages.

http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/amp-gauges.shtml

I would run a 8 gauge wire from the alt. to the starter relay and then from the starter relay to the battery + with a fuse and then you should be okay with your amp gage.

Agree... with the EFI Fuel pump and electronics idle output of any of the squareback options would be low. The Powermaster/Delco or 120A Denso would work well. As posted above you will need one of the bulkhead bypass strategies. An alternator as above would fry the stock wiring in short order. On my setup, I ran 6 gauge wire + 10 gauge fusible link from the alternator output to the fender relay... and added a voltmeter to keep track of system condition.

Thanks,

I will study this close. I have the dash out and wire harness spread out. Should be doable.

Looks like you have a nice 68 charger project. I also have a 68 charger (69 fenders) with an updated electrical system. I put in a painless system and I can tell you it wasn't painless to install. I put a toyota alt.(denso) in this car.
