vinyl top replacement - 12/31/08 07:52 PM
I HAVE PAINTED MY 70 RT CORONET AND NOW I WANT TO PULL THE OLD TOP OFF AND REPLACE IT. WHAT IS THE BEST WHY TO CLEAN TOP OF CAR WITHOUT HURTING NEW PAINT ON REST OF CAR ? I KNOW THIS IS MAYBE NOT THE ORDER TO DO IT, BUT YOU KNOW HOW IT GOES ,I DID NOT THINK THE TOP LOOKED BAD UNTIL IT WAS PAINTED! THANKS :STEVE

We can certainly HEAR YOU!! but you will need to type slower 'Cause I can't read that fast LOL. Anyhoo, My top pretty much peeled off and the glue seemes to be hard and sandable. Yours doesn't sound like its as bad as mine was so to save the paint, I would wait for it to cure fully, and then use a good strong solvent that will disolve the glue. Mask off as much of the painted part as you can but it seem like you'll still have to do some touch up at the edges. I'm going to paint the whole car including the top even if I do end up deciding to put the vynyl back on.

I wouldn't get any sort of solvent/stripper (and I think it would take a 'stripper' to cut the old adhesive) near a new paint job. I would mechanically remove.
1) Remove trim
2) Tear off top
3) Mask edges REALLY well with 'safe' tape (3m blue or equiv.)
4) Mask rest of car with plastic
5) DA sand adhesive--careful with those edges!
6) Remask
6) Repaint top (epoxy prime or catalyzed urethane)
7) Re apply Vinyl top.
