Reverse rotation 360

Reverse rotation 360 - 06/06/14 09:34 PM

What needs to be done to use a marine reverse rotation 360 in a car?
Is it just change the cam shaft, oil pump, distributor and the drive gear?
Just the long block, no accessories.
Please tell me the crankshaft is the same

Timing chain. (?) since it is a marine engine, is it a crank gear to cam gear set up?
Food for thought... Since it is a reverse rotation engine.
I also can see an oil pan.

Still a standard timing chain but what is puzzling me is the dizzy drive gear is cut opposite of the small block I'm replacing it with.
Going to take pictures to post.

the knurling on the crank is backwards and will pump oil out the rear main seal.

hell I would run it as a reverse rotation! It will really freak people out when you nail the throttle and the right front picks up instead of the left front. But that is just me!

You would have to flip the rear axle over also, otherwise its got 3 speeds in reverse LOL

I'm trying to use the long block to replace a hurt engine. The '74 360 is a fresh 30 over and decked. The heads were just done and resurfaced too. I started the job before I found out its a reverse rotation engine. What if I remove the rope seal and install a 2 piece lip seal? Would that help with the rear main sealing?
I have a full days labor into it already pulling, cleaning, prepping etc. I need to have this thing burning fuel by Monday.

Not sure on a 360 Mope, but I did a 350 GM out of my old Cruiser for a project I did and just had to use the correct rear main seal....cam and dizzy....problem solved...???

Is the crank OK in the "hurt" engine? Too bad you aren't closer, I've got a crank you could have.

I would think the oil pump would be reverse rotation also.

Transmission wouldn't work either...

Ya it would not pump fluid and the converter might not work as well

Re: Reverse rotation 360 - 06/08/14 04:05 AM

Not that it helps much but if you look at the two cam pictures, you should notice that they are cut to keep the dizzy ( and oil pump ) spinning clockwise.
Doesn't matter at this point, I chickend out and had to buy another short block just to make good on my word. At this point, it's like I'm/we're doing all the work for free for a friend because my customer isn't the one who made the mistake.
The local ( run of the mill) machinist that sold me the engine (last year for a project that fell thru) is the one who should get his [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] kicked! He's no where to be found and good riddins.
I will do what I can/have to to finish the job.
I'm sure someone out there could use this fresh reverse rotation 30 over 360 with a nice purple shaft cam, it should make for a nice engine just backwards
I might find out that all I need to do is to replace crank and cam, the rest is pretty nice.

that sucks Rick, put that thing in the boat section of Craigslist and sell it

Re: Reverse rotation 360 - 06/08/14 03:46 PM

As said I'd see if you could flip it on a Mopar boat site & get some or all of your equity back. Smokey Yunick made one of his engines reverse rotation so it would torque over to the left which would help the stock car turn left easier. Me I'd wanna run it . IF the knurling does push oil out I would polish it down to minimize that & I think all the other issues could be easily dealt with ex what about the starter as it needs to be cranked CCW. I wourked on an inboard 318 once & that was what stuck out in my recollections. That and it had a strange firing order 2-1-8-4-3-6-5-7 iirc

Re: Reverse rotation 360 - 06/08/14 09:35 PM

Robert,
I was thinking the same for the knurling too.

P.S. Check you firing order
It's the same as any other LA, you just started with 2 instead of 1

I was just thinking & trying to remember if the FO I said was what it really was as it was 15 yrs ago but it jogged my memory & on the starter it had a special bellhousing & the starter bolted in from the rear & that's how they got around the rotation issue

Re: Reverse rotation 360 - 06/08/14 10:49 PM

I wondered about that thinking... reverse polarity starter?
Thanks for the answer!
