Based on these paint chips for 73-74 Dodges, and the picture of this Charger - does anyone think it is a 73-74 factory color? If so, which color??

Lighting can make a WORLD of difference so you really should get the fender tag code to know what that is. WAG would be Y4 or Y6

My Dad had a Chrysler in J-6 back in 74. This Charger looks like it is supposed to be J-6 but they missed it or the monitor is off.

Yeah, tough call. You're right about lighting. I sure like it though. Different. You rarely see an old Mopar now days that isn't Rallye Red, Hemi Orange, Plum Crazy, Sublime, B-5 Blue, Black or White!

I'm 70% Y3 on 73 chart or 30% Y4 on 74 chart.

I believe that the correct answer is JY6.

JY3 looks more like beige.

IMO, identifying a paint code from a photo can be very difficult. There are just so many variables; lighting conditions, camera settings, monitors etc. Also, as we know, even repaints in the same paint code can vary in appearance.

However, with that being said, the car in question and the JY6 Challenger do not appear to be close at all to my eyes.

I put the cars together below for easier comparison.

You're right on all the variables. But I still say it is not Y3 or Y4. Lighting, etc. could change the color that much.

Another variable is your screen. At home the Charger looks a little greener than the monitor I use at work. So it could be KJ6.

Boy, side by side really squashed that idea! Here is another shot of the same car:

Trying to determine a color based on a pic, on various PC monitors, color blind viewers, faded paint charts, again on PC monitors of varying performance, color blind viewers, etc, etc, not knowing whether the car in question is original paint, custom paint, repainted in original, but with a shade variation of various available paint ALT codes, a different primer base, etc, etc, etc.....the answers are endless, so peel back the blinders, remove the feed bucket, think outside the bun, that the color may not be "factory"....paint a car the color you desire, factory or not, seen this too many times, an individual pics a color based on a magazine pic, or internet pic, only to be disappointed when the car is done, or the paint purchased, when I see a car in a color I like, I ask the owner or painter what paint, primer, techniques were used to achieve the color, if they can't answer all the necessary facts needed, then on to the next specimen for answers

Re: Please define this color. - 05/23/14 05:45 AM

Dayclona - point well taken, thank you.

I'll have to go on the hunt and find out who owns the car and see if they can shed any "light" on this color.

As I stated earlier - I REALLY like that it is different and really like how it looks on the car with the colored top and interior it has - enough to the point I'd consider painting my car the same.

Thanks to everyone that took time to visit and post!
