Analyze this? (Wheel hop) - 05/16/14 02:50 AM
My 83 D150 has had a wicked wheel hop issue since I put it together, imagine sitting on a jack hammer when you mash the loud pedal enough to break 'em loose. Because of that I seldom beat it hard since I'm too afraid of destroying the driveshaft or rear end. Finally nailed it hard on pavement again the other day and looking at the marks I thought them interesting as I've never seen 'scalloped' burn out marks before. Both wheels spinning (at least intermittently) it feels like hook/spin/hook/spin and looks the same on pavement. Any ideas on the easiest fix or do I just go on being easy on it?

Here's a little closer shot of just one.

Maybe a bit more info is in order - 83 D150; 360 @ 30 over w/MP 340 repro cam, edelbrock performer intake/carb (600 cfm), Thorley tri-y headers to 2 1/2" duals; A833 trans (not o/d); centerforce df clutch; 8 3/4 rear w/3.23 SG

What are you using for shocks and springs? Also what tires and tire pressures. Wheel hop basically comes from spring wrap up.

Nitrous! Seriously though, my van would do the same thing until I put the big block in, now it takes two lanes but no more wheel hop.

Factory springs in the rear with 2500 lb progressive helpers and Monroe sensa-trac shocks. Need the overloads for it's real, intended use and kinda thought they should help stiffen things up too. Have been considering yanking them and put in air bags for when I have to load it down. Tires are typical winter daily driver in NW MN tires, P235-75R15 Bridgestone Dueler Revo (fairly soft compound w/lots of siping). It acted the same with the previous tires which were a more typical all season tire. Oh yeah, 32 psi is usual.

are the front segments of the springs clamped ??

The factory strap up front plus the front of the helper is tied to a plate under the springs. Found a pic of when I put it together....
Now don't bust on me 'cause I've been putting up with this issue since just after this photo was taken.

I don't think that progressive helper spring is doing anything for your wheel hop. You need to clamp each leaf to the spring bundle in front of the axle. That is the easiest and cheapest thing to try right now.
If you do it let us know if it helped then you can consider other options if needed.

My 92 D250 has done that too. It doesn't happen all the time.
Quit doing burnouts. It's a truck setup for carrying loads, not hot rodding.
You need to find a way to keep the front of the spring from flexing.

Yeah, I'm mostly with ya feets, I mean, it's taken over 10 years to ask about it if ya check the photo dates....... I mostly just drive it and avoid the hammer, but the other night after I redid the carb and made the changes I'd been planning for years it ran so sweet I had to try again - and the black marks just looked so dang weird with the scalloped edge kinda thing I had to play it a bit.
Now I'm not against yanking the spring style overloads and putting in some airbags to catch the weight when I absolutely need it so I can effectively play without them most of the time, but it is hard to justify that kinda change for a once or twice a year burnout (or whenever I get unresistable urges to be stoopid.)
