Steering column HELP!!! - 05/14/14 10:41 PM

I took off the steering wheel to change the signal switch and removed these to bolts thinking that would be loosening up the cone like cover. (please see pics) Took the bolts out, noticed nothing happened so I was screwing the bolts back in and there is nothing gripping the bolts. Anybody know what I did wrong??

Did you rotate the back portion so it no longer lines up with the cone?

I'm not sure what's going on but there is no bosses that I can see. I jacked the car up and moved the front tires like I was turning and the spindle turns and the cone and collar stay straight like it should. I'm not even sure what the purpose for those two bolts are. when I turn the cone and collar the cone, front collar and lower outer case turn but you can only go to about 2 o'clock (and still no bosses.) That bolt in pic in upper left, when I un screwed the bolt I didn't move anything and just tried to put it back with in a minute so that's why its a bit funny. Maybe its for a column shift car. mines a floor console???

Re: Steering column HELP!!! - 05/15/14 12:50 AM

Tried moving other direction and nothing. The back cone, front collar and long outer shell all move together. you could actually spin it from the engine bay as well (outer shell sticks out about 5 in on firewall). So if these bolts are to keep the front collar and cone together then they are not separating at all right now and when I eventually put the lower steering column bracket back on that will lock in the outer shell, cone and front collar in place. is the front collar and the cone suppose to move independent of each other when the bolts are out??

Just FYI- That bearing in the middle is stilll available from the factory

Re: Steering column HELP!!! - 05/15/14 08:40 PM

Hey there... thanks for the replies... I did take the locking clip off and it did not budge, both cone and front collar(were you mount the switch) seemed to be fused together, when I twist the front collar everything moves(except Steering wheel spindle of coarse) the collar cone and long casing that goes through the fire wall all rotate together.
I tried to twist the front collar and back cone in opposite directions to get it to break free and nothing.
that bearing looks good but (spindle moves smoothly) when I took the locking ring off I tired to pull off front collar and nothing...front collar and bearing are stuck together. When you look behind the front collar I see nothing .. just doesn't make sense right now... like there is not a purpose for the bolts (maybe the slots were for a column shift car) last owner had the interior completely redone 10 years ago so maybe someone just stuck them in there just b/c...must have been a chevy guy .. .... long shot)
there was no noise of a brocket or bosses falling when I took the bold out and I tried to put back within a minute and I didn't move anything..

Re: Steering column HELP!!! - 05/16/14 12:27 AM

I have my '73 newport column apart on my coffee table as we speak.
On the lower collar there are three round bosses sticking up and one goes in between the walled in areas of the slot for the wires and the turn signal stick on the upper collar.
The collars fit together pretty snug as does the bearing on the shaft, after removing the screws I tapped on the shaft with a brass hammer while pulling on the upper collar and it popped right apart .

Re: Steering column HELP!!! - 05/16/14 01:03 AM

I see now, mine is a lot different. Pictures take forever to load for me. Mine has three collars with the key in the column.

Re: Steering column HELP!!! - 05/16/14 01:12 AM

yea.. if you look at my first couple pics someone put the wrong bolts in and they were the wrong way also... so the bolts were just sitting in there ... the bolts in my car are also way to LONG! 1,25" so what do you think .. they are to secure the cone and upper collar together right??
Mine are stuck together anyway. so I'm just going to close it up with out the bolts(they are the wrong bolts anyway) not sure why mine had different bolts but I'm thinking that these would make a big difference if it was a column shift b/c if you yanking on the shifter you would have to make sure its secure to the bearing housing. but if its a floor shifter there is no movement just a turn signal switch..... does this make sense

Re: Steering column HELP! UPDATE!! - 05/16/14 12:12 PM

I attached a pic of a upper bearing housing of a 70 RR and the bolt holes are gone so somehow the engineers eliminated the bearing housing bolts.
