Came from the factory with a vinyl decal, any reason why you are painting it? The lettering will be hard to work with for sure. If you really want to paint it, maybe you purchase the vinyl stripe and cut it out for a template?

My painter wants to paint it on. I see his point. No fading, pealing or feeling it there.

If your doing a restoration you'll be sorry you painted it. If not then it doesn't matter if it's right. The fading/peeling etc... is pretty bogus unless your car is going to be driven through all weather and then it will still last 15-20 years.
