** Feeler ** RECALL WHEELS - Any Serious Interest - 04/15/14 11:23 PM
This is an offshoot of my "Sandcasting" thread. Back when the repro "warrior" wheels were available I wanted a set but thought I'd just buy them when my project was ready. (I had more important things that needed purchasing at that time) When I was ready to buy there were no more available anywhere as the company producing them had been sold and the tooling went awol. I picked up several 15 inch Recall wheels a few weeks ago and am willing to dismantle any or all of the three to obtain suitable parts for sandcasting. I'd like to make 15x7 wheels with black powdercoated hoops which will accept readily available trim rings. I've got a quote from a wheel shop which can machine raw castings to final size, machine for steel inserts in the lug nut area (so standard conical lug nuts can be used)and assemble them into the steel hoops by a swage process in which the hoops are heated to expand, the center casting is frozen to contract and then the parts are pressed together to cool and then riveted. The quote I don't have yet is to sandcast the centers. I have a very rough idea using some online calculator which I'm not even sure I'm using correctly. Producing somewhere between 100-300 parts (25-75 sets of four wheels) doesn't drastically change the overall cost of the project from what I can tell. My guess is that a minimum of 25 sets of 4 wheels would need to be made at around $2500-$3000 per set would need to happen. My guess is that maybe 1 of 10 people who say they want will actually follow through with the purchase. I don't do this for a living so I'm open to assistance, thoughts, who is "seriously" interested etc. Please discuss.

When Specialty first came out with these wheels they made 15x7 which is an aftermarket size. I complained and a year later they made 15x6 at an additional $500 per set. 15x7 was $1800 and 15x6 was $2300.
Aren't the ones with the chrome lip still sold?

I know it is not correct...but if you went with a normal style 2 piece aluminum wheel construction...using aluminum outers, you would be able to get the price down I would say.
Then it is only a matter of making a mold for the outer, and welding them in aluminum outers.
I know the aluminum outer is quite a bit more than a steel outer, but you will save in the steps needed to make the centers at least. You'd just have the $6k or so for the molds for the centers, then the $130 a piece or so after that to crank them out.
I'd have to look up the price for 15" aluminum outers but from memory a 15 x 7 polished outers is around $81
Versus a chrome steel 15 x 7 outers at around $47 or so..(raw are cheaper obviously)..give or take, don't have my pricing info right in front of me.

As I said in your other thread I have a buddy that wants a set.
He doesn't really use the internet or computers for that matter.
The car he's wanting them for is real J code, Q5 Turquoise, Hemi 4 speed 69 Coronet R/T convertible.
I can pm you his contact info if you think this is going to happen.

Not exactly a stampede of interested parties, huh!
I suspect the lack of interest is based on two things. 1) someone who isn't an expert in the field heading up the project and 2) committing to an unknown end result.
You'd probably do better if you pursued a "group buy" and contacted the original reproducer to make another limited run. Or even contact those guys first to see what they'd need as a commitment to do a re-run.

No interest here unless they were small bolt pattern.

As a former aluminum foundry owner I can tell you these guys could make the tooling and castings for you:

A number of years ago I sent out feelers regarding importing a product into Canada and I had a lot of "interest". But what I found out is this:
"I'd buy that" REALLY means
a) if I had any money
b) if I had a (insert item here) to use it on
or
c) (and MOST importantly) if my wife will let me
