69 B body k-member - 04/15/14 01:45 PM
Got my k-member out and found "reinforcement / repair" welding at nearly every joint. This thing has been beaten pretty bad but the car seemed to sit level and was going straight so for the lack of money, I think I'll try to just rebuild this one. My main concern is the back two mount holes seem to be worn into an oval shape but the front two seem to have no wear. How could this be? Is this common? Should I try to repair this? Is there a repair recomendation? Does someone make an affordable replacement that will still use the stock components, i.e. torsion bars. I looked at a used k-member but was weary of its history also.

Pics of the area in question will help everyone answer your questions.

With the K off, try one of the bolts in the holes. There is a shoulder on the bolt that fits the hole to locate the K. If the shoulder is really loose on the K then it needs work. Which way are the holes oval - front to back probably no big deal but side to side could be from a bent frame.

OK, will do. Thanks for the info. Will try to get some pics on here. I have measured diagonal across the mount holes and it is the same, less than 1/16. If I get some good photos you will probably see why I am a little concerned. Sure wish there was an affordable "like new" option. I have all new stuff to rebuild this one, just hate to replace every worn part only to discover that I need a new k-frame too.

Yes, I did find one in a Road Runner, was one, not much left but the guy wanted $200 and the idler arm mount was different, perhaps it was a '68, but the mount for the idler arm captured the bottom of the bolt only and mine holds top and bottom of the pivot bolt point. If only I had a photo to show. Gotta get that. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the info, I kinda figgured this guy was overpriced on the k-member. Carlisle is way too far but I will try local a bit more. Mopars are few here in the south, just gotta shake the bushes more. I found my motor home 440 for $75.

Yes. In his defence, that was drum to drum but no steering box.

Just hard to know the history on this stuff. This guy has been suspected to be more than a bit shady but he is the only one in the community that I know has lots of stuff. He buys any junk he can find, scraps it out, squirts some paint on it and e-bays it. I can't really fault him but I can't afford him either. Hope to go to Carlisle some day just to see it all, I know its gotta be great.

I may do that but for now I,m gonna see what comes to the largest Mopar event in the area, "Mopars at the Battleship", only 20 min. from my house. There is usually a couple of dozen guys with parts and pieces. The event is next week end, Saturday the 26th. Pretty good turn out if the weather holds out. Good location too, just off I-10. If the cars don't show you can always tour the USS Alabama, big gun battleship and the related attractions. Thanks for the option.
