so let me tell more of the story. I had this problem last fall, I changed the thermostat problem solved? well till yesterday it was. I went and had the oil changed, they topped off the coolant and now i can't go five miles without it overheating. It has two electric fans on the radiator.

with it overheating that fast k.i.s.s. confirm that the fans are operating. Pull the stat & check it (Murphys law/coincidences happen)

My guess would be a clogged radiator if you can hear the fans run. It happens a lot because the newer radiators have such small tubes in them now.

Any codes?

I never saw it running anytime I have been under the hood. Is there a way to check this?

If your radiator is a 2 pass design the radiator can fail in a way as to bypass the tubes. Check to see if the radiator is hot everywhere.

I just changed the radiator in my 5.7 Magnum last month. Not expensive or terribly difficult. However, if you are overheating so quickly it does sound like the radiator fans not turning on.

Just look at the fans with the motor running. After the car is warm, the fans should kick on automatically to prevent overheating.

Turns out it was the fans. I have been so hung up on what seemed like a lack of fluid circulation. Cost me $200 for a new set and problem solved. The thing I don't understand is why this all occurred after I had the coolant topped off.

Thanks for letting us know how it turned out.
Wonder if the coolant needing to be topped off was caused by the fans failure?
In other words the fans failed first?

one of the jockeys may have jostled the fans or might just be Murphys law. An non mechanic acquaintance ran into this recently when he has something done & they hooked the fan wiring up backwards, evidently they are polarity sensitive & it was pushing or pulling the air the wrong way
