Mystery 340 exhaust manifolds?

Mystery 340 exhaust manifolds? - 04/04/14 01:38 PM

I just pulled off a motor a pair of 1968-70 340 exhaust manifolds and saw these do not have part number or dates cast into them. One one manifold, there is the correct 2863553 part number, but the number is one the backside and stamped into the iron itself? Looks unusual and can't say I've ever seen it that way before. Is there any reason why these would be that elway instead of numbers cast into it? I have an iphone 3 so I can't load pics yet. Any info please.

I've been told that those 340 manifolds were cast at a Canadian plant with the recessed part number. The t/a motors were built on Canada so they got that exhaust manifold. Some other 340 got them to so they are not strictly t/a. Barry should know.

I have had a couple sets of those manifolds and always wondered what the deal was. I was told both sets came of an E-body.

To help "De-mystify" them a little, I've also found them on multiple 1970 340 4 barrel E-bodies, and several original 340 4 barrel A-body cars, both 1970 and 1971. They were not an AAR/TA specific part.

I found one of those in the dirt in a wrecking yard in Madera maybe 15 years ago. I made money on it...

Yep. I got a pristine set off of 70 340 4 speed Duster that had like 35,000 miles on it. He pulled the manifolds off at like 10,000 miles. My friend bought it and mini tubbed it and put in a 440. What a waste.

I have a 2863553 like this and it has an L2 stamped below the #. I thought the L2 was a date code like 12/72? It is on a 72 340 Demon I bought.
