Hi Iv got a poley 318 in picas trying to put the fount cover and water pump o and was wondering if some one has a list or diagram of wear the bolts go don't want to brake a cylinder thanks fore looking E.

You want no less than 1&1/4 times the bolt dia, that amount of thread engagement including gasket/washers etc & a bit more than that is OK. Mockup what you have & if you have a certain # of bolts of a particular length/thread/etc that might help you group them. Most critical is the DR front of the block where the front cyl wall on that bank is the closest

RR I can testify about that front bolt.We did a cam change on my kids old 318.He Had all the bolts in order.Put the front cover on and added coolant.I hear water going in the pan.Long to short he put in too long a bolt and put a hole in the cylinder.Lucky I had another complete 318 sitting.I put it together instead of letting him.Rocky

Yeah Mr Murphy does not play but luckily he dont come around very often. In high school shop class a kid added some coolant to a somewhat overheated eng that was low & he did not start it up first, you know the rest... There was a thread here (on Moparts) way back with members sharing their mechanical mishaps during their careers & it was one of the longest threads ever

I used a piece of clothes hanger wire with a little hook bent into the end to figure out how deep the threaded holes were, then measured the bolts and put in ones that were about that length.
Keep in mind that any that go into the water jacket must have thread sealer on them or they will leak. That means any holes that don't have a bottom on them.
RR, 1 1/4 D is very safe, it might be interesting to you to know that bolts will develop their whole strength with two full threads engaged in the nut.
