Do I need a shroud?

74 Challenger, 318/904 upgraded with 340/360 like cam, 600 cfm 4bbl, dual exhaust. I replaced the stock radiator with an aftermarket aluminum one "rated to 375hp" (supplier's rating) from Radiator Express. Dims are 17" x 22" a 1 3/4" 2 row. I'm also running their electric 16" fan mounted to inside so it sucks air. Do I need a shroud? I have consulted Mr. Google images and everyone seems to be running electric fans without a shroud. What do you guys think?

Hello Scott. I ain't never ran an electrical fan but my first Q would be is it running too hot?

My are that you can never go wrong with a mechanical fan, clutch and shroud and have a Pusher style Electric fan on the outside. My friend has a 26" Aluminum Radiator with Two SPAL pullers....he took it out the other day to go fill up with gas, something happened, burned out the relays on his fans. He had to park the car for 6 hours and wait for the engine to cool to drive it the 10 minutes home.

Shroud depends on the vehicle.Look at factory setups.A lot came minus shrouds.I ran my 65 built 440 for years without one.When I got the C body rad from the junkyard it had an OE one so I ran it.My kids 62 300 413 has no shroud.Both never get over 180 or so.If it runs OK dont sweat it.We both run stainless flex fans and mines been on at least 20 years.My rad has never been touched and is stock 65 BB.Rocky

Thanks guys. Hoping to get away without the stock fan but the relay failure is something to think about. Maybe a spare or 2 a good thing to keep in trunk with spare ignition components

Pete, 6 hours to drive 10 minutes?? I guess it would be completely cool then. But why? Using a little common sense you can drive indefinitely on no coolant. DO ask me how I know; Once had a temp control crack and start leaking on the interstate running through Arizona in my 74 B100/318. Good 50 miles from next service of any kind. Limped in letting it cool for 20 - 30 min and driving until the temp read HOTTER then shut down for another 20 - 30 min. As long as you don't try to run too long, you can go forever.

He parked it and came back 6 hours later...he doesn't know much about mechanics and HIS mechanic at the time scared him into leaving it because "he would blow the freeze plugs"

I would have thrown a blanket on the radiator....put two bags of ice and run the car for 10 minutes to get home since I would have been at the gas station
