Torsion Bar Installation - 03/23/14 01:46 AM

Hey guys,

Is there a place to find a step by step or even a video on how to install torsion bars. I have a 1971 Demon that I have to install the entire front suspension, k member, and drive train.

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Back of on the adjusting bolts slide them in. Adjust the height as needed. There is a left and right on the bars. I use a big cable clamp on mine to have something to tap on. Or you can buy a tool made to install them.

the factory service manual has a process outlined in it, you might find the correct year you can download from here....

biggest thing would be make sure the tension off the LCA's is released prior to trying to do anything - if you dont know how to do that just ask someone will tell you.

bars have left and right...must be clocked correctly in engage rear sockets...and front pivot must be aligned to allow the t bar to engage the front socket while remained correctly clocked to enter rear sockets...

not that difficult..

Thanks guys! They are firm feel's if that makes any difference. Does the manual have pictures for a step by step?

bar type shouldn't affect install method, they still have to go in....

when I installed mine I slathered them with anti seize as well

Whatever you do don't take a hammer to them. Get a correct installation tool.

Hey Guys,

I was able to get the torsion bars installed on the 1971 Demon. It looked a little intimidating but was pretty straight forward. I only ran into one problem when we had to wire brush the inside of the sub frame receptacles because the were filled with sand and paint from the media blast and painting. I used anti seize on each end of the torsion bars (940 firm feels).

I also installed the upper A-arms and shocks.

I would have installed the MP Power Disc Brake Kit also but I ran into a problem. When I installed the spindle and tried to tighten the castle nut to the upper ball joint the shaft kept spinning. I noticed this because the zerk fitting kept spinning. So what is the trick to installing the spindle and keeping that upper ball joint shaft still while tightening the castle nut?

Just in case you haven't read the book yet, before you install the boots, pack the recess with grease.

Drive the end of the A arm down so the ball joint stud is in the spindle tight.

Also, if you removed or rebuilt the lower control arms don't tighten the mounting bolts until the car is sitting at ride height.

Yes, snug the mounting nut but don't torque it to spec until you have the car at ride height. I can copy the correct pages from the manual and email them to you. PM me here if you want me to do that.
