440 Carb Recommendation - 03/16/14 11:56 PM

About to send my 440 to the machine shop to get worked over, nothing fancy just rebuilt. I'd like to get rid of the old thermoquad, any suggestion on a street carb, brand, model?

750 Holley 3310 vacuum secondary.

Works great on stock and mild 440's!

I'm a Holley guy, and on a fairly stock 440, I'd go with an Avenger series 770. I have had horrible luck with Eddy performer 750's, but heard that the 800 thunder series is a good piece.

What will the 440 put out as far as HP?
What is your intended cam specs and gear ratio?

Older 440 cars came with small AFB carbs, (600 CFM) coupled with Hwy. gears. An old friends Imperial comes to mind. IIRC, it was a '67. Just talking out loud here. If your car is equipped with extra performance parts, that 3310 suggestion is a good idea.

I would probably stick with the/a thermoquad, hard to bet in stock/mild applications. If set on a change I am hearing good things about the new Demon carbs, holley design, spreadbore compatible.

Holley 4175. Its a 650 CFM spreadbore. Direct bolt on to replace the T bogger. No adapter needed.

Re: 440 Carb Recommendation - 03/17/14 01:36 AM

So I have no strong preference at all, but I just rebuilt a 440 for my Cuda and we pulled 388 HP with a Edelbrock Performer 750 with Vacuum secondaries and an Electric choke. (Part 1411) So far, I like the carb quite a bit and you can get them used on Ebay for about $150.

My 440 is pretty tame. Bored .30 with 452 heads that were ported with valves cut back. Cam is .470 and the stock intake was replaced with a Edelbrock RPM Aluminum split-plane. Stock Exhaust manifolds. Overall, I was very impressed with the output.

Hard to beat a 3310 on a street big block

Playing the same game but with more cam, headders and edelbrock heads.

With the 3310 would you run the quickfuel metering blocks?

Also read good things about the street demon 750

If I could afford those and they would have came on my 73 I'd be all for it!

thems great and I love mine, but if yo don't have a spare $2200, a godd old 750-850 Holley is the way to go.

If you are going for something that looks closer to a stock setup, a 750/850 holley with a short bowl conversion sitting on an earlier 70's square bore or m1 dual plane intake will fool a lot of people.

Nothing wrong with a properly tuned TQ. Send it out to Scott Smith for a refurbish. Get the throttle bushed. Or stick it in a freezer style Ziplock if it is the original. That carb is an 850. All you'll ever need in a street car.

Or for a new square bore the Thunder 800 is easy to tune.

The six pack have ALOT of potencial on a 440 but expensive and if your building a stock 9,5 of lower compresion engine whit more or less stock cam i would surgest you stay whit a 750-800cfm 4 bbl carb on a dual plane intake to save your money but if you whant to do a street pounding engine and you have the money for the 3 nasty 2 bbl carbs and intake you will defenetly have some great moments whit them

Check out AndyF's AREngineering website for dyno articles. He made quite a bit of horsepower with the Edelbrock 800s.

As most high performance bigblocks came with Carter carbs, an Edelbrock 800 on a CH4b would look closer to stock than any Holley.

The 750 Street Demon will bolt on your stock TQ intake and should be a very good carb.

I've been running the Eddy 1412 800 cfm for years, no problems. I would go with one of the newer AVS Eddy's now I think. The stock Carter AVS on the 69 GTX is a great carb.
