Carb change

1966 Coronet 318 poly.Stock except for a rebuild in 2004,just put hardened seats in.I have a carter bbd 1 1/4 on it now but it is leaking and old.Instead of having it rebuilt I am considering buying a new carb.Not looking to upgrade for more power just looking for a replacement.What is a good choice.Thanx

not sure you can still buy a brand new carb that bolts to the BBD pattern intake.

Where is it leaking? You could rebuild it for cheap or even just replace the parts that are leaking: needle/seat, top gasket & if desired you could flush it out with some brake kleen in lieu of soaking it if you dont have the soup. eBay might have something for you

BBD's are very easy to work on. A gallon of carb dip, some spray carb cleaner, and a rebuilt kit (and maybe a float) would take care of it.

Or, just hit up your choice of parts stores and they will probably have a re-manufactured one in the system.

If it is an original carb and you go the re-manufactured route, then keep your original and just pay the core charge. You might want it later down the road.

So here are 2 pics.I think I might replace a couple of gaskets as the carb has given me no problems except for the leak.I had a parts diagram and list for this carb but can't seem to find.Any info would be appreciated.

I figured out I had to change the pixel? setting on my camera before I took the pics so the pics would load. I ain't a camera guy but I can say that they look just as clear as the larger pixel ones I have stored as far as I can tell. read your camera instruction manual or online

It's definitely leaking out of the top AP hole in the top casting. I would open it up & get the kit (they're cheap) & just add the needle/seat and the new top gasket & reset the float level & replace the AP plunger & call it good without removeing the carb & soaking it & all that. I twirl the needle inbetween my thumb and forefinger to smooth the tapered neoprene part for a better seal & lube the bowl screws to make it less likely they will strip the alum casting if you are in & out of there repeatedly which you wouldn't be with this carb like you would with a carb that you were doing alot of jet changes but it's a good habit to get into. EDIT I would also lightly spray the bowl gasket with WD40 on both sides which helps preserve the gasket if you're back in & out of there several times

I'm assuming the aluminum tag under one of the top bolts is missing. See if there is a number on the base. If not then likely 1 kit covers alot of those years of carter BBD's. Talk to your parts man. When you get to that point open up the carb & holler back & I'll help you thru it if needed

I believe there is a rebuilt one on the 'bay right now.
I hated mine, the float would stick open and spray gas all over the engine. No matter how many times I had it apart I couldn't get it to stop that. Also, it was nearly impossible to find smaller main jets for it although I finally did around the time I switched to the Weiand 7503 and the Holley 1850. They were used on Avantis and the Avanti owners group is a source for jets.

So RapidRobert I am about to clean up the carb on Saturday...I never heard about the wd40 mmove but i'll try it..Just need to set the float,thats the hardest part for me....

new needle/seat/seat gasket installed with the outside nut tightened to its final amount. I'd go ahead & have the short fuel line nipple tightened to its final position also so you dont have to tighten the seat anymore which changes the float cuz it moves the tang. float already installed before the needle/seat installation. The U shaped piece in place & hold it in position. Carb level. fill the bowl with gas. set the gauge across the floats on top & bend the tang as needed to get the float level within a 1/32" of specs. with the needle closed ideally you want the tang to contact the needle at a 90 deg angle or pretty close to it for the best leverage

I got the carb cleaned and put new gaskets thru out.New needle and seat,new float.Took a few times to get the float right but it seems good to go.Gas mileage back up to around 17 mpg,Happy...BUT,since I replace the gaskets and put back together I get a hissing noise from the carb,it changes as the throttle is moved.It sounds like a vaccum leak but the car is running good,hooked up a vaccum gauge got plenty of vaccum.I started the car with the top bowl of the carb off,saw it on youtube,If I cover up the venturi area thats where the hissing is coming from.What do you think....

Not sure. I have heard that on some carbs so you might be OK. Sounds like the mileage/driveability is excellent. EDIT I'm thinking I've heard that with 2 bbl carbs with fairly high vac numbers which you very likely have. I'd say you're good unless someone advizes otherwise
