I just noticed I'm getting some rust discoloration on my intake manifold. Any suggestions to clean it up without removing it?

If you do have rust stains I'd try CLR or Lime-a-way.

Not on aluminum I wouldn't. Now how aluminum got rust ion it, I dunno.

I've only had one intake take two doses of that stuff to get them spotless

I've found that wd40 does a fantastic job on our old Corvette's Edelbrock intake manifold that has their so called chrome like "durabrite" finish. Might be worth a shot on a plain aluminum one. Soda blasting or very mild other blasting media works very well,,,but of course normally requires removal of unit.

CLR uses hydroflouric acid, nasty stuff and it will change the appearance of the aluminum.

No HF in CLR. I don't think it's even in wheel cleaner anymore. Very scary stuff.

Cheapo oven cleaner is mostly lye, which eats aluminum. Not the bright choice.
Mag wheel cleaner, which is meant for aluminum wheels, is a better choice. Still, test it on the bottom first to see what it does.

Looks like someone changed the formula, you are right no more HF, not in Lime Away anymore either.

I'm surprised HF was ever in household products. Get it on you and it will leach the calcium out of your bones. Very nasty stuff. I delt with it in very concentrated form at my last job. We had a very strict handling program and our own emergency response unit that trained weekly incase of a spill or contamination problem.

I agree. I don't spend my time following cleaner formulations, but it is hard to believe that HF would have ever been in any household cleaners.
Now CLR use to have phosphoric acid in it. It is unfortunate that it is gone from the formulation, as there really is no good reason for its removal (other than some EPA stuff most likely). I believe that phosphoric acid is the cleaning/oxidation removal agent of choice for aluminum.
