Firm feel power box with what wheel?

Firm feel power box with what wheel? - 02/18/14 05:45 PM

Starting to think about working on my Belvedere again. Hoping to get the steering fixed before nice weather officially shows up. All I really need is a good steering box (which parts stores are completely unable to attain).

I'm trying to decide which box I want. From most people's stories I'm thinking a stage II is right for me, but then I got to thinking wheel diameter will play a part in this as well considering the size of the stocker I replaced with a Grant.

So, for those of you loving your FF power boxes, would you mind telling me your wheel diameter. I'd have to check, but I think mine is 14"...

I am also looking at a stage II or III for my 67 318/727 Belvedere II convertible, leaning toward the III.

I've got a stage 3 box in my challenger and I'm using a tuff wheel. I like it, it's a comfortable level of resistance, but there certainly is a little effort involved. Kinda like half way to manual steering. I did the mopar action power steering pump shim trick when the old box was still in the car, and needed to remove the extra shims with the new FF gearbox. If it's too heavy for my wife's liking, I'll throw the original two spoke wheel back in.

15" American Racing wheels with Cooper GT tires, here (on a "worthless" 72 Barracuda).

Firm Feel Stage III. Which is splendid, but at low speed , acts like a manual steering setup. I put in a new pitman arm, and a new idler arm, and Firm Feel's tie-rods. Plus a professional alignment by old school mechanics. Overall road feel is fine , except on "high crown" highways.

I guess I'm spoiled by modern rack and pinion steering, as the overall feel is crude, like an ox cart at times.

Thanks guys. Sounds like I should probably stick with the Stage II. I want firmer than stock, but nothing close to manual.
