Why do I squeak going around corners?

Why do I squeak going around corners? - 02/18/14 12:17 AM

OK guys, im kinda lost on this one.

I have recently had an 8-3/4 installed in my Dakota. And I am at 75 miles since the install, and it was finally warm enough to roll down the windows.

I noticed a "squeak, squeak, squeak" noise coming from the rear of the truck when turning.

So I pulled into a parking lot and did some slow tight figure 8's, and the sound is coming from each wheel area (the squeak seems to be coming from the inside radius wheel).

I rolled into the shop and they double checked all clearances, and made sure u bolts were tight, even tore things down and removed the brakes for a quick inspection of the new parts in there as well. Nothing looked out of place, or seemed to show any signs of trouble.

They reinstalled and we ran it on the lift, no noises, no odd vibrations.

The current thought is that perhaps the wide tires, and the suregrip, with the relatively short wheel base, are causing some deflection in the steel 8" (Cragar soft 8) wheels, thus making the squeaky sound.

Is this plausible? Tires are Cooper Cobra 295/50/15 on the 8" wide Cragar Soft 8 wheel. (should I look at switching to the 10" wide wheel to better fit the wide tire?)

Axles are Dutchman with green bearings

Rear is a cone style suregrip

I can learn to live with the squeak, its not that noticeable, I just would like to be sure I'm not missing a larger issue.

I would think from too much axle end play tho I ain't sure how you would reduce that with greens

Is it simply tire binding from a tight sure grip? If you try on a loose or wet surface it should've obvious.

yes when turning on snow that same day, there was no squeak, However there were not enough places to test this due to the warm weather. On the gravel parking lot, there is too much noise to hear if anything is squeaking.

It still has me wondering if its the rim flexing, or something else.

I have had tight sure grips cause wheel squeal, or chirping, and even had a few really snug ones result in vibration, but this is not the same sort of sound, and no noticeable vibration.

This is like a metal to metal sort of squeaking. Really light sound, and changes with wheel rotation speed.

Is it only when you turn ? I can tell you I have driven alot of trucks over the years (Dodge tech for 23 years) and many of them with some miles on them would squeak from the rear and it was really noted riding next to a building. Most of the time it was out of round drums touching the brakes shoes at the drum high spots. Some were worse on turns because the rim does flex a tad on turns as I also had front disc do the same and many times you could only hear the disc on turns when the rim rotor flex a tad. Ron

I suppose it could be the drum rubbing slighty on the brakes. It has all new brake parts, and shoes, one new drum (one got ruined in bearing failure) and one existing drum.

Drums were turned at same shop to be sure they were round.

Maybe the 75 miles hasn't given the fresh cut drum, and new shoes time to settle in to a pattern yet.

Brakes are adjusted correctly, but maybe the shoes have some high spots or something along the edges.

And yes, it is only making noise on corners. I used the drive by a building trick to see if it made any noise while driving straight. I have used that trick many a time to find a noise.

There HAS to be a new title for someone with that thread title.

I agree with Ron on this.
Make sure the axle flange has zero run out as well.

Check pinion angle and possible rear u joint yoke contact. I had this when I changed a set of ss springs with a slightly shorter front segment. Had a squeal at low speed going around corners and thought the drive shaft was bottoming out in the tranny, so shortened it and still had it. Looking things over a friend thought the pinion angle looked wrong so changed it with shims and that took care of it

try COASTING around your figure 8. Then try again with slight power on, then with a little more power on. If it squeaks only with power on it's the new/tight sure grip. My car does it now and then when only slight power on, never when coasting around a turn.

What about polyurethane bushings in your rear suspension. Were those swapped out? That was the cause of my squeaking and I replaced them with rubber
