833 transmission

833 transmission - 02/08/14 10:04 PM

Any ideas why a newly rebuilt 833 will slip from 4th gear when decelerating or coasting downhill? Does not do this in any other gear or during acceleration.

Either it wasn't fully rebuilt (the hubs, dogs, and sliders wear) or the shifter should be adjusted one turn longer on every rod (this "trick" worked on my son's 18-spline that was NOT fully rebuilt).

Thanks Jim, I adjusted 4th gear out one turn with no improvement. I'll try the rest and see what happens. May have to crack it open!

Turn it one turn the other way (so, two turns back the other way). If this doesn't work, it's time for a real full rebuild (which I have never done, and I've been through a few of these).

Will do. Are you saying to back all rods off 2 turns or just 4th gear?

Bellhousing misalignment will make it pop out of 4th on deceleration.

I'm out on a limb here cuz I ain't a stick guy but I'd put the 1-2 & 3-4 trans levers in neutral the stick the drill bit thru the shifter to line it up then adj the rod threaded lengths till the L bends fit right into the hole(s) in the trans levers. If that didn't solve it then I'd: with the 3-4 trans lever disconnected I would shift the trans lever to put the trans in 4th then shift the shifter handle to 4th & see if the rod length makes it line up with the hole in the 3-4 trans lever on the side of the trans & adj it if needed & retry.

You may need to adjust to stop screw to make sure it goes all the way into 4th. Adjust the shift rods as described above, shift into 4th, disconnect the 4th gear rod at the lever end, and see if it needs to travel any more to get fully into gear. The FSM calls out the required free play or gap to be set at the stop.

The rods all need to be adjusted the same so that neutral is even. This isn't a fix, really, but it will get you by sometimes. John has more experience than I do and he might also be correct.

That is how I do it, but it was on a freshly rebuilt A833, I rebuilt it so I know all was done right, and a brand new shifter. Adjusted the rods till the slipped in without any drag and I used meatl bushings and new clips that I shimmed the slack out of. http://www.jegs.com/i/Hurst/530/332-7302/10002/-1?parentProductId=749352
Worked properly.

But if things are worn you may have to fiddle with it.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I found no bushings in the linkage, so I will order a set of metal bushings and realign everything. This is a hemi in a 65 Belvedere and things tend to be weird!

If after doing all of the adjusting that has been recommended and you see no improvement, .... When the transmission was rebuilt do the input shaft get replaced? (4th gear)? When a trans pops out on deceleration in any gear, it usually means the "dog" teeth are worn. I would, however, start with making sure the shifter is adjusted properly, and that the transmission is going all the way into gear. (ALWAYS do the easy stuff FIRST)

this is the first thing that needs to be checked. Pilot bushing in good shape? Who did the rebuild? does the brg ret size match bell? If shifter linkage is adjusted and everything else checks ok trans needs to come apart.
