99 Ram Transmission Shifting Issue (strange)

99 Ram Transmission Shifting Issue (strange) - 02/08/14 03:35 AM

My transmission is sometimes holding second gear, refusing to shift into third until I either A: let off the gas and quickly cycle the transmission into neutral and back to drive (works every time), or b: rev the engine over 4500 rpm and then let off the gas (works sometimes).
There is another component to this, it only seems to do this during extreme cold. I experienced it once on a subzero day in my old home, now I have moved further north and subzero is common this time of year.
I'm planning on changing the filter/fluid this weekend, anything else I might look for while I'm under there?

Ask John Kunkle who is a member here.He knows those trans well.

Typical problem for the Rams of that year. They had a problem with a lip seal shrinking. Only fix is to rebuild it.

Front clutch seals need to be replaced.

Thanks guys, heard from John Kunkle and talked with a transmission specialist I know from back home. They both seem to agree with you. At least it's still functional, just not very automatic! Should let me limp it along for a little bit until I have time to tear into it. Its at over 150k miles, I was thinking an overhaul was coming pretty soon.

They are right as I used to see it alot at the Dealer I worked for. We had an updated front drum for many models also. Ron

Yep while my Trucks do not do it my Grand Cherokee does. It's been acting like that when it's cold out for over 3 years and hasn't hurt anything. Once it's warm the seal expands and shifts smoothly....I will rebuild it only when something critical happens so far though no "other" problems with the trans....
