I.D. this flywheel ?

I.D. this flywheel ? - 01/20/14 12:33 AM

I was told for an internal balanced 340 , it's 130 tooth and I have a 1970 340 I'm changing from auto to standard ..... even if it ain't right I got it for cheap but appears neutral balanced which I'll confirm when re-surfaced .... thanks

thought this was a no brainer , but guess it does take brains , I'm getting conflicting opinions so I guess it'll wait until I hit the machinist. So we're saying this is for an externally balanced motor as in later 340/360 versus what I was told by the guy I bought it from .... guess you can be sincere and be sincerely wrong Nice guy and for 45 bucks , oh well .....

Somewhere on this site is a set of diagrams showing the various external balance flywheels, I cannot find it. If I do, or someone else has the link, post it.

That is a nuetral balance flywheel that someone has had balanced for thier motor, probally had a issue with heavy parts in the build up on thier motor A good machine shop can make it balance correctly for your motor again by adding more holes opposite of the ones that are there now the other expensive option is to have heavy metal added around those holes or have them welded up, which should be less expensive

Which is the long way of saying it is no longer internally balanced.

You gotta remember that these parts are cast and can have heavy/light spots just from the casting process. I've seen cast parts from the factory that look like swiss cheese from so many balancing holes and others with hardly any.

IOW, all those balancing holes ganged together could be original neutral balance holes.

So they'll spin it out and let me know .... if it aint neutral , at a machine shop - if it's neutral it's a bolt and go , right ?

If you're not rebuilding and balancing what you have (didn't say) ... confirm you're internally balanced to begin with then have this resurfaced and neutral balanced ...assuming you bought it knowing ?

'70 Swinger 340 converted to auto but was originally 4 speed , buying components to change back to 4 speed , couldn't pass for the price even if I can't use it ....

Nah, man,the backside looks wrong.Should have a slight rise to it where the crank goes.The flat back ones I've seen were from trucks and such.
Appears to have a lot of holes, are all those threaded?

Nw that I look at it again, notice the holes are evenly spaced on either side of the PP pattern.If you remove weight evenly, it cancels out.What about those weird PP's that had their pattern set up like that, two and two and two?

IMO, that is not a factory flywheel. It is flat across the back. The OEM ones I have are rasised where the crank hub mates. And it has too many patterns for clutches. I would say you have an aftermarket flywheel that has been balance for an external motor of some kind. Who know what CID?

, It's an aftermarket wheel with patterns for Borg and Beck ... which is the style Chrsler usrd ... and the Long style which was manily used by Ford.

You have it , have it balanced neutral and you are good to go .
