Speedometer question - 12/23/08 01:14 AM

My 72 Swinger hasnt been run since 1995. I finally got it running today after messing with it for almost a month.

I have the car up on jackstands and when the car is idleing in neutral the speedo needle wants to jump around.

Is this a speedo cable lube issue or is it an issue of the the speedo head needing lubrication. What else could be causing the needle to jump around like that in neutral? The transmission is a 3 speed manual(Column shift)

Pull the cable core and clean and lube it. That should fix your problem.

The jumping needle is a lube issue.

The fact that the speedo is trying to register at all is because the output shaft (and rear tires) are turning a bit.

yeap... torque converter inertia with tranny makes to spin a little bit the wheels even in Neutral when rear is on jackstands. Then the speedo will read that.

That does happen specially with tight Low Stall converters

So is it the same with Manual(Non Automatic) transmissions? I suppose it would be fronm the input shaft spinning
