How will Rack & Pinion affect our cars? - 12/24/13 11:20 PM

I have never installed one...my friend wants me to install one from Unisteer on his 72 Roadrunner. Its supposedly a bolt in.

Is it worth the $1300?

I ask because I haven't a clue....I have advised him to a quick ratio Firm Feel and a rebuilt Steering pump and it should be an upgrade on its own

The Unisteer will increase the car's turning radius considerably. If your friend wants improved steering have him look at the Borgeson conversion.

I put a unisteer rack in my buddies 70 Chally under much protest. What a p.o.s. Turning radius sucks, not to mention the the 50 universal joints and supports needed to make the connection from the rack to the column. No matter what, the steering input is at such a bad angle it still binds some when turning. Dont do it.

Wow...that is beautiful....How does the handling feel now as compared to stock? Is it harder to do a wheel alignment?

I agree with all of the above posts, Either upgrade the box and pump or do the whole shebang IE: RMS

Alterkations are nice, but at $4000, is a very expensive change out for imply a steering upgrade. For a street cruiser, similar feeling results in handling can be made for around $2000 using Hotchkis or Firm Feel parts. IMO, the best reason to use an AlterK is for less weight or then ability to quickly change spring rates.

If your buddy is willing to drop $1300 on the steering, the Borgeson box is well worth the upgrade over using a UNisteer R&P.

, but just a Firm Feel Stage 2 or + is in itself a big improvement. The rack mentioned is just slick marketing IMO.

I've driven both ( RMS & stock cars with as many upgrades you can throw at them )

There is no way in hell a rack can be called a marketing strategy.

The rack ( RMS ) gives the car a new car feel, much like a modern dakota with crisp feel and response that is unable to be achieved with an outdated steering box. The facts are there are too many parts to ever achieve the feel and response a rack can provide.

I seem to recall there are certain German cars who up to recently were using steering boxes and they were noted for outstanding steering.

I'm sure if everything was up to snuff and you had a new blueprinted box instead of a 40+ year old hammered unit an old Mopar would steer just fine, more so if the k-member was properly braced.

apples to oranges.

Up to snuff steering boxes and a rebuilt system did not compare to the RMS and like I stated earlier, I drive both and there was no comparison in terms of feel and response.

It's a totally different feel....

The Op did not mention the "RMS" rack, others did, and that is a proven thought out system, the system the OP asked about has a poor reputation, as evidenced here, and reviewing it as advertised is, as I stated, and will repeat, mainly a slick marketing trick to try and piggyback on the success of proven systems like "RMS". However stating that a rack system is and of itself a huge improvement, is hard for me to totally accept, in that anyone using a typical RMS system has made many other changes that play a part in the perceived steering improved results, and attributing that improvement to strictly or even mainly to the use of a rack, is only an opinion, imo.

Before this completely turns into an apples vs, bananas pissing contest, you have to remember that an RMS is a completely redesigned and engineered front suspension system. It does what it does very well.

The UNIsteer is an attempt to hack R&P into a sytem that was NEVER designed for it, and it fails miserably besides just plain being a crap kit.
