A-518 strength?

A-518 strength? - 12/19/13 03:21 PM

Being a 727, what kind of abuse will a 518 take? Does a lockup convertor make it less beefy, or can one be built to take some power as well?
I'm pretty interested in putting an overdrive in the Mirada, and also looking at a 408. Just wondering the limitations of my imagined combo.

Sorry, everytime I talk to my one Uncle and tell him my plans he tells me stuff like that, drives me nuts!
I am ruining my RR vert by stuffing a Hemi in it and only a fool would do such a thing to a car as rare as it is--wack wack wack.

Or at the very least not talk cars with him.

So I breezed through some links and it sounds like the best thing to do with a 518 with some 618 parts in the OD?

I know a guy that bought a 518 new ten or more years ago and it still sits in his garage, soon it will be in my garage and then I will want to upgrade what ever needs it to make it live for many many miles.

I wouldn't bother with using 618 parts unless you plan on some really high hp. Even then, I would switch to billet pieces.

I rebuilt the 518 in my '98 Ram last winter and installed billet servos and accumulator plus better bands, heavier struts and various small parts for the vb..
I already had a TransGo shift kit in it from 2000 so that part was covered. With recent upgrades, it shifts even more positive.

Most of parts I used work in a 727. What does that tell ya..

I buy my parts from these guys.

Maybe I have a good one, but I do keep the trans fluid clean. My '91 D150 A-518 has never been apart(nor the 360ci), going on 326,000 miles. Did a 1150 mile round trip to NC, empty car trailer down, loaded back. Those NC VA hills put my truck to the test! I'm not sure how long I'll let it go before I rebuild it.
