How do you tell if the clutch fan is bad? My car overheats when idling in traffic. Gets to about 220* or so. I know that the water pump is good and the cooling system is clean. It cools down as soon as it gets out of traffic and gets some air flow into the radiator. Also, the radiator has been cleaned and recored so I have ruled that out. I'm almost 100% sure its either the clutch fan or radiator cap but the cap is also somewhat brand new.

Any ideas?

easy.
if it turns easily while the engine is hot. its shot. fan belt tight? pully grooves arn't to "shiny"?

Cap only determines the pressure at which it pukes, nothing to do with temp.

Do you have corrosion/scale in the rad? That could easily compromise its performance.

Doesn't spin easily and also passed the tape test that Kunkel mentioned. Now I'm completely lost.

i had thermostats that never completely opened before. matter-o-fact, i once got 2 in a row that didn't.

Thermostat is a 160 but opens up completely. Could the lower temp be a problem?

to much coolant mix, air in the system, inaccurate gauge, bad waterpump, crappy rad rebuild. lotsa variables
at play here. fan blades should be 1/2 in 1/2 outta the shrowd.

Does the system build up presure? The should be hoses hard to compress. Does the fan blow a ton of air when the engine is revved? It should.

50-50 Prestone mix, brand new gauge from Auto Meter w/ sending unit, brand new pump and radiator was cleaned and recored.

Builds pressure just fine and fan blows plenty of air.

Also now that I think about should I worry about the fact that I can completely depress the top hose when the car is cold. Its as if there is no water in the hose but I can hear it suctioning however when I let go of the hose

runnin' a shrowd (sp?)? check for a stubborn air pocket?

well that just about covers all the bases.

check for a air pocket. force the upper rad hose below the level
of the top tank on the rad. make sure to do the same with the heater hoses. then top it up. also, make sure the
resevoir is at the full mark. or.. your new engine may just like going to 220deg when idling.

Sorry, I can't help ya much -- I've been trying to get mine to cool down for 3 years. I gave up...

I should also add that it has a bottle of Royal Purple cooler added into it.

Theres a difference between our weather don't ya think. This is happening in low 70's night time crusing. Not 90* arizona heat.

But hey at least its a dry heat

did you put a different engine in it and kep the old rad in it

Yea it has a rebuilt 360. Nothing big. Old radiator was the 22" stock 318 one. Don't really see it not being able to supply enough cool water tho

How about some pics? Does the fan stick into the shroud at all? Stock 22" radiator? Sounds small, is it a 2 or 3 core? I'd be running a 3 core minimum.

shouldn't be a problem. had a 440 running of a 318 rad for years. never a problem.
