How to remove terminals from bulkhead connector??

How to remove terminals from bulkhead connector?? - 12/20/08 09:24 PM

Yeah, easy question. However, I assumed you put a thin screwdriver in the recess (engine compartment side) and then pulled the wire from the passenger compartment side. Tried that quickly and didn't work, so before I break sonething by doing it wrong, thought I would check here....

What's the scoop - any tips for getting them out?

on the side that has the little dip to it
slide in a small screw driver and push the tab in
then it should pull out

it looks like you have silicon on there if so it will be much harder to get out (or is that greese)

Thin, small screwdriver works ok, or you could buy one of these terminal remover tools.

Give the wire a little push forward, like your trying to push the terminal out of its' housing; then use a very small flat blade screwdriver to press the tab down, and pull the wire w/terminal out the back.
The tool posted above works well. Drawback, you can't "see" into the housing with it. It is difficult to see if the tab is released from the recess it fits into. Otherwise that tool will make quick work of a bulkhead once you learn the feel of it.

Thanks guys
OK, I was on the right track, but as usual seems they need a little 'persuasion'.
I'll try a different screwdriver and a bit more wiggle

Yes Tom, that is dielectric grease in there, so should not cause a problem....except stopping me from seeing in there properly, hence this question! Thanks for the picture

I'm running my MSD wires through the bulkhead connector so need to remove some redundant wires.

OK, done deal, thanks for the info

If it helps anyone else, another tip I thought of while doing this - my bulkhead connector is installed in the car, so makes it impossible to get to both sides at the same time (i.e. to insert the screwdriver and to pull on the wire).
So...I got a spare male terminal in a pair of pliers, pushed it in to the female in the bulkhead connector, and also inserted the screwdriver, then pushed. It worked a treat, hope that helps someone else.

While I'm at it, another question.
The new female terminals I have are the ones in the picture below, slightly different from the ones I have just taken out. They grip the male with the big sprung blade rather than the alternative 'curled edge' terminal that is in the car now. They still have the retaining tang on the back.
Any reason why these would not work??

good advice. i had to learn this the hard way because i just kept pulling on that wire even though i knew the tab was there and had push it down with a thin blade screwdriver. unless you push the wire car-forward a pinch first, it'll be "hooked" on the ledge. i ended up folding over the tab and ruining the connector. live and learn i guess.
