What does it take to build a 70 Superbird Clone Car... - 11/25/13 07:33 PM

I have a 70 Road Runner that a local guy keeps bugging me to sell him so he can build a "Tribute" 70 Superbird. My question is: Can you buy good quality parts to build a car like this. (IE. Front Clip and Wing) He wants me to help with the project but Im not sure what's all involved. Can someone tell me the basic's.
And who sell's the conversion piece's he'd need?

There are some pretty nice parts out there but there's more to it than the nose and wing. You'll need a nice pair of 70 Dodge Coronet fenders, the back window, trim, fiberglass plug, vinyl top and trim, package shelf, plus all the inside the trunk bracing for the wing. Not too mention a 440 Super Commando, 6bbl, or street hemi engine to be correct it's a 383 equipped Roadrunner.

is the car a hard top or a post? if you don't have to have a clone, your build would be easier, to build a bird that looks like a bird. there are some features on a factory bird that i don't care for. i didn't do the rear window conversion, (left the factory "b" body back light) i think it looks better and,90% of the people don't know the difference. other things like that. there good sources for parts.

ok...got a pen...youre already at a great starting point!i almost did this with my 70 roadrunner..youll need to get a set of 70 coronet fenders, nose weather fiberglass,or metal/aluminum.u want a 70 satellite/toadrunner NON POST car.theres people that make alot of parts to make a superbird out of satellite/roadrunner 1970 edition.tech questions u might try wingcar6970.

He could start with a real one and just swap in the dash VIN and fender tag from your car.

Re: What does it take to build a 70 Superbird Clone Car... - 11/26/13 01:27 AM

I think he's after a car that looks the part but not 100% correct. The rear window thing I dont think he even know's theres a diffrence. My car is a hardtop too so that'll be one step closer to it looking correct.

I told him id sell him my car minus the front clip (fenders, hood, bumper, grill) with a 440 & 727 and some other small parts for $7500.00 .....Maybe thats a good deal maybe not....He figured he'd have 50G into it and I guess he's ok with that. Right now I really like the car and am on the fence about selling it as its soooo nice and solid!

Anyways, thats the deal so far. Here's the car which was this winter's project..

i realize ive had a machonudo hampton court cigar and a few yards beers, but if i remember wright...superbirds use the same rear window, just some vynyl top funny looking little plastic pices at the bottom,2 dimond shape little fill in pieces.you dont need a rear window filler ala chevy vega rear hatch, you need them if youre making a 69 daytona i believe.gotta get back to my food its burnin

Re: What does it take to build a 70 Superbird Clone Car... - 11/26/13 03:14 AM

Nope the bird had a lot of body work around the back window including a plug and a specific window. It was a rush job at best and a vinyl top was standard to cover up some of the rough spots.

You probably need to win the lottery AND get a second mortgage to afford the rear window though...

There's a 70 Charger cloned into a daytona for sale that has all the hard work complete. It has a real 500 plug and working headlights. Google Lucas motors texas. It comes w/ a bunch of parts to complete the build. IMO he'd be miles ahead starting with that car then yours. I'm thinking about buying it myself.

Re: What does it take to build a 70 Superbird Clone Car... - 11/28/13 12:53 AM

Well, He stopped by today and said that he will just check that one off his "Bucket List"....He knew I really wanted to build the car this winter and also after adding everything up with labor and parts he decided to just let his dream go. If he could find a car that someone has given up on building but has most of the parts...and the price was fair, he'd probably go for it but as it stands right now he's not buying my car...

here's some info to pass on to your buddy although it is just my opinion. in 2001 i decided to build a ss hemi dart clone. at that time my friend todd really wanted a charger daytona but they were out of his spending range. as he watched me proceed over the next 6 yrs he found a 70 road runner and decided to do the superbird build. now i don't know how much he has in it but we go to alot of the same shows/cruises and he almost always scores an award and always has many people vewing/asking? about it where as my car is often overlooked except by diehard chrysler fans or drag racers, i'm talking like 2 to 1 liking his car over mine and my car is very correct looking. neither of us are trying to pass our cars off as anything but a clone although both of us get the "is that a real 1". his is even a post car so anyone that know those cars will know it is a clone. both cars have hemi motors but as stated people are drawn to his car. 1 of his best stories imo is a guy that owns a real bird asked him that he must have alot of money in it and why would he put that kind of $s in a clone, so todd's wife asked him where is your's at and he said stored away to which she replyed "exactly we drive and enjoy ours" so tell you buddy it may be a costly project but if he wants a car that is a magnet @ shows and cruises, go for it!!!!

Well, I gotta say, That IS one awesome looking car your buddy has. I like the black on black theme. Most you see are Orange or White but the black looks great!

While we're on this topic, just how close is the Vega hatch to an original window plug? Does anyone have pics showing the difference between the two?

Post vs not, what's the difference?

Thought there was only hdtp / conv?

post car, (coupe) rear windows are fixed and there is a "post" to the roof.
Hardtop all the windows roll down and there's nothing between them.
You can have 2 door and 4 door "hardtops"

The Vega plug is used as a low dollar approach to doing a Charger 500/Daytona, not a Superbird, if your looking for a low dollar approach to doing a Superbird rear plug, a 70-4 Cuda rear window lends itself to being a viable alternative, if you need pics, I have one of a Cuda rear window in a B body...
