Simple question about oil pan gaskets

Simple question about oil pan gaskets - 12/19/08 02:08 AM

I need to replace the oil pan gasket on my 440. I picked up the nice "impossible to rip" version from Milodon. Do you install these dry or with RTV? The package doesn't say and neither does their web site.

a thin coat of RTV on either side of the gasket, thats what I did with mine, the tear proof gaskets work great no problems yet just do the normal stuff like any other gasket. clean the surfaces check the pan for uneven spots fix em and so on

I just put 'em on dry.

I haven't filled it up with oil yet.

I'd cleaned all surfaces really well and had already straightened out the pan too ....

But, when I was tightening down the pan to the 200inlbs as in the book, the pan bent right back to how it had been before, if not worse.

I'll likely pull it all back apart tomorrow, use some rtv, and go a little looser on the pan bolts.

Any suggestions for torque?

I could never be a hooker. Something about laying on my back and getting up and down a bunch gives me a huge headache.

Using RTV and new gaskets is like wearing a elt and suspenders.Ive been a pro wrench for 40 years and never use RTV with gaskets. Its not needed and if you have to use it something is wrong. My pan gaskets are 10 years old the cheap MP ones.Still no leaks at 80 PSI oil pressure.Rocky

I guess we'll see what dry does. Hopefully 200inlbs did't bend the pan too much.
