Dynomax VT mufflers?

Dynomax VT mufflers? - 11/02/13 04:08 PM

Anyone tried the VT mufflers. They have a valve that opens to make them straight thru when you floor it.
I am thinking about putting some on my Lil Red Express. I wonder how they would sound with the stacks.

Quiet at idle is how they would sound. Friend has a set on his late model hemi ram and you hear nothing until it is opened up.

From everything I've read, they rattle & it is VERY annoying. Dynomax head engineer told me the rattle was fixed, but people running them say otherwise.

Moving parts inside a muffler = cool concept, bad idea.

I have them on a challenger with a 383 and a second car with a 340. Both have TTI exhaust. I like them. Have not experienced the rattle, but mine are later units. Was told they changed the springs to eliminate the rattle. Drone is minimal and the sound inside is nice and then louder when you step on it. Jeff

I bought a pair of the original design. They rattled so much I thought it was something in the bottom end of my fresh engine at first. My experience was bad! I agree that moving parts in a muffler is not a good idea.

We have played with many sets now. In some cases, you can't hear anything rattling. It depends upon camshaft, compression and size. We have them on a 410 with 10:8 compression and a really big cam. They only slightly thump but the noise of the exhaust pinging through the headers is far worse. The way they quiet and eliminate roar and drone is far better then the little bit of noise they make at idle sometimes.

The wire mesh you see silences the closing thump but as they flap violently, the other side may clatter. Again, big cams, big engines, big compression = thump/rattle.

Not all cars work as well but in our case, they are great. On Dad's 480 cu in Pontiac, they did clank a bit but Walker recommends against the big engine, high compression, big cam set ups.

They are truly great mufflers and since they have a sound guarantee, you have nothing to lose but a bit of time and labor trying them. I say give them a shot if your engine fits the requirements.

Dad had them on his 69 road runner with a stock 383.The passenger side would rattle at an idle, thought it was a bad muffler and swapped the mufflers from side to side and the rattle was still on the passenger side.
I think it has something to do with mounting the muffler upside down

I have a pair on order for small block. If they do not work, I will go to stock mufflers. I cannot stand the drone on the Dynomax on the car now at hiway speeds. Mine could be rattling now but I could not tell.

The part number 17138
OFFSET Camaro style,
has quite a different case
due to opposing outlets

Would it also have an advantage surppressing rattle?
