69-1970 B-body Four Speed Pedals>explain the diffrence - 10/24/13 03:33 PM

I have a four speed pedal set-up from a 69 Roadrunner and I've seen ads for 1970 Pedals being for that year only! Whats the diffrence? Will a 69 set-up fit in a 1970 Roadrunner?

Can someone explain the diffrence.

Im thinking about making my new project a four speed car but Im trying to use up parts laying around from other cars I've had or parted out. This is my 1st 1970 car, everything else I've ever had has been 1969. Thanks for the help!

I've never seen 68-70 B Body pedals broken down to specific year applications regarding 4 spd set ups?, I have "69" pedals from a Roadrunner in my 70 Charger,...no issues, bolted in...I know there may be some issues with the brake rod attachment hardware regarding bore sizes, depending on what type of pedal rod your using, or booster set up, but that can be an issue just swapping brake set ups in that require a different booster/pedal rod, or intermediate linkage,...often solved with a bushing, or dilling/tapping to a larger screw stud assy/etc. etc, ...worst case senario, weld the hole shut, and drill/tap the require thread to reuse your old hardware.

They will interchange, but the brackets are stamped differently.

As stated above, the pedals will interchange. 70 did have the neutral safety switch setup on the pedals so that may be part of the stamping changes listed.

Well I've went and started my four speed conversion and have the 69 runner pedals all painted up and ready to install in my 70 runner but they sure dont appear that they will just bolt up.....the bracket that the steering column bolts to appears to be welded to the lower windshield frame and contains the same part the four speed pedals have to bolt the steering column in.
Anyone have a picture of a 1970 four speed pedal set-up?

Good luck with your conversion i did mine over two years ago & i just converted back to a automatic i am just more of a auto person.

The picture i posted of that pedal came out of a 70 super bee that the safty switch a friend of mine we traded all or parts he got my 4-speed stuff i got his killer 727 & stall and more i got those pedals for him to go in his 70 coronet he has my old ones in killer shape only missing that switch he may sell them if you are in need of some..

is your issue with the "bracket" that contains the pedals and spans/bolts to the master/booster/and steering column?...if so, just transfer the pedals, and the side bracket that holds the clutch pedal over to your existing "auto" bracket, perhaps you have 66-7 B body pedals?...if you could post a pic, that will help us, help you

Yes, my problem is with the bracket that houses the pedals. my housing has the same shape as the welded bracket that I showed a picture of...even has the two threaded studs that stick down to bolt the column bracket to.


I'm not home now so I don't have any pictures of what I have.
If I can transfer the pedals over then great!!

You can transfer all the pedals/pins/nuts/etc and side bracket, even if you have 66-67 B body pedals (as the main frame bracket is different in 66-7)...what 4 spd are you using 68-9?, or 70 B/E? as there is a tailshaft/mount difference?...when you get chance you should post pics of the pedals for ID

I have a couple different four speed transmissions to choose from. I have an 18 spline that I have no idea what it came out of and couldn't get to the numbers as I had stuff piled on top of it.....and I have a good 23 spline out of a 72 Chally that I drove and know its a good working unit.

Dave,

What you have is a center column bracket from a 70-4 E body, but fortunately the pedals you have and the side clutch bracket are 66-7 B body, close enough for 68-70 pedals, they will swap into your 70 automatic center section...someone must have tried to swap that stuff into an E body before you got it

Dave, the 23 spline tailshaft would be "technically correct" for your application 70 B/E and you could use your stock 70 B body (1 yr only) automatic tranny crossmember on the 23 spline tailshaft unmodified...if you want to use the 18 spline, thats a 69 and down tranny you have there, different crossmembers between auto/4sp...but you can use your automatic 70 crossmember, you just need to cut open the top welded in structure, and cut off the 70 nose stub where the mount fit (rubber), then purchase a 68-9 mount

Photo below, 70 auto/4spd mount on top, 68-9 4spd only bottom, basically the same, just needs some surgery, on the 68-9 the mount fits inside the open crossmember, either tranny you decide to use will still locate your shifter in the correct opening on the floor


Next question what driveline did the car have before?, what type of automatic 727/904?, what rearend, what are you changing/useing?...

One more question. Where does the reverse light belong on the dash now. I have a light that I pulled out of a 72 Demon yeeeears ago and figured I need it so that this conversion looks correct.

Can I swap the 23 spline tail shaft onto the 18 spline? (curious)
The car had a 383-727 combo with a 8.75 with (489) 3.91 gears but I had a thought of maybe swapping the Dana 60 from my Superbee as that car could use more gear anyways....lots of options! I'm basically trying to use up a lot of stuff I have laying around and really having fun doing this car!!&

Dave, you need to measure the 18 spline's tailshaft overall length, minus the rear shaft seal to where it bolts to the tranny, the 23 spline will measure (should) approx 16 inches, measure the 18 spline...
