Replacing Fuel Tank Sending Unit on a B-Body?

Replacing Fuel Tank Sending Unit on a B-Body? - 05/25/08 09:37 PM

Hello,
I would like to replace my fuel tank sending unit on my '70 B-Body. I wanted to know if I need to buy anything additional other than the unit? Will I need special gaskets or seals when doing the replacement?

Also, if anyone has done this before -- Do you have to drain the gas tank (or remove it) in order to do this procedure?

Thanks very much!

I swapped one in my 70 RR last year

I bet you could do it without taking the tank down, and when you buy a new sending unit, it comes with the gasket you need

I went ahead and dropped the tank because it had a ding in it I wanted to take care of at the same time

you shouldn't need any special tools, but even if you don't drop the tank, I think you should not go about it with a full tank

Run the tank low if you can for convenience, if the fuel level is above the hole it will pour out on you and that is never fun. You can change it with the tank in with no problem, and replace the gasket with a new one whether it comes with one or not, you don't want to do it twice. YOU will have the easiest route if you can jack the car up and suspend the rear end, it provides you with extra working room, I would also plan to replace the hoses and go under the car with a sharp knife and just cut throught the old ones, have 5/16 and 1/4 inch line on hand. new worm clamps unless you are doing the crimp style clamps.

Thanks Guys!

Does anyone have a recommendation of a good place to order one of these? One that is reliable and comes with the necessary gasket(s)?

Thanks!

Hi Guys,

I've seen one of these for sale online -- says it takes a 3/8" "fuel feed" for B-Bodies. Does this sound like the correct one?

And, is there any type of adjustment you need to make to the unit once you put it in the tank to get the correct readinds? Something like a calibration so it knows the level ...or does it just know the level based on the length of the unit?

Thanks!

the one I got didn't need any calibration. Tested outside the gas tank and got correct readings

Got from VANS AUTO SALVAGE, with metallic strip instead a wire, and brass floater, like the original.

Only issue what I didn't like is the outlet is straight and my original was allmost 45º, what did make better hose fitment
