BB Overdrive w/ rear parking drum - 12/17/08 03:55 PM

hello and happy holidays,

i was reading Mopar Muscle the other day and they featured a quick bite on type of overdrive adaptor for the back of the 727 tranny. i am curious if there is some sort of overdrive available that will allow me to use the parking drum on the back... here is my tranny...

i know there are a couple different options that take the place of the extension housing but all seem to use the modern slip yoke

my 64 D100 426 Street Wedge push button tranny uses a flange to bolt the parking drum to the output shaft of the tranny and slip action takes place in the drave shaft. the extension housing has a spcial pin to locate and secure the backing plate for the parking brake shoes...

anyone have experience with this?

i would like to use the original tranny with the push buttons and simply adapt an overdrive to it.

are there any other tranny options that will allow me to use the push buttons? i guess i would have to update the rear brake to accommodate a parking brake there...

thank you,
Ben

The unit you linked is for 70 & newer, it's not cable shifted also it's fpr a 12" output shaft & his is 18"....

Imperial services makes an adapter to connect the cable shifter to a later trans, but most cable shift trannies had a second cable for the parking pawl..Your truck uses a drum brake so it's gonna complicate things...This is one for John Kunkel...

The Gear Venders OD won't fit the '62-'65 internal cable shifted trans.

Gear Vendors includes an adapter tailhousing with their unit and it won't bolt to the pre-'66 case.

thanks for the replies y'all.

i was using that later style as an example of the type i have seen and realize it won't work on my set up.

You could use a later 727, and get the adapter cables to still be able to use your buttons. Just looking at the pic though, I do see a potential problem with that setup. The GV overdrive unit might not clear the crossmember that is right under the parking brake drum in your pic. There may be more room than appears in the pic, but I would do a lot of measuring before I plunked down the money for all the stuff it will take to get the GV OD to work. You will have to find a rearend and parking brake stuff from a later truck, unless you can just use a longer parking brake cable to get to the rearend instead of the parking drum. I have a 727 w/ Gear Vendors OD in my Challenger,so if I can provide you with any measurements......send me a PM and let me know what you need
