Help with clean metal prep

Getting ready to try some of Eastwoods 2K Aerosol Epoxy Primer. It's just a small job - not external finish.

Prep will be media blasting, and I've had mixed results with that over the years in terms of rust coming back. So I'm mainly concerned about dust and blasting media getting stuck in the pores.

after blasting I was going to start with compressed air and a nylon brush. In the past I have also used acetone or laquer thinner or brake cleaner but noticed this always seems to leave evap marks, plus it is expensive.

But I have also noticed many people saying to use a Silicone Wax & Grease remover. Does this help get the remaining dust off?

If so, where can I pick this up around town? Would something like Klean-Strip Prep-All Wax and Grease Remover from the parts store work? Convenience (i.e. aerosol) would be a big plus here but not a deal breaker

It's not going to be a big job, probably just one can of the epoxy

Should I just get a gallon of something and spray it through a paint gun? Much later on I will need a lot more when doing external finish, but that is a long way off. All options are open this way, just looking for some experienced tips

I''m media blasting today with coal slage and have done lot's of it over the years.

I don't touch the freshly blasted metal, only blow it off with air. What little dust is left on the surface with be sealed in with your first coat of primer. With the right coatings I have stopped rust permanently.
The surface is too rough and porous to wipe any thing across it without making it worse, dirtier after blasting.



It don't need anything other than dry air to make it ready for primer. Freshly blasted white metal is as good as it get's for painting. Don't make it worse by wiping something across it or apply anything before the first coat of primer.

What are you using to blast with? If it's getting stuck in the pores of the metal, your using the wrong media.

This particular sand is quite fine. It is not what I've used in the past. Leaves a pretty good texture

I know the health hazards, I take the necessary precautions

I don't know what area of the car you are working on but whenever I blast or strip old metal, I always acid etch.
I am not familiar with the Eastwood product you are going to use but I would check to see if it will etch. I like to use their rattle can etching primer if I am not able to paint the metal right away.
