Trans Question on my Liberty

Trans Question on my Liberty - 12/16/08 11:24 AM

My 06 Liberty has a trans issue. When I am coming
to a stop but dont come to a full stop and then accellrate
the trans will flare then hit/slame into low. The
engine idles a little bit low also(all the time),
I've been trying to hold the revs up a little to
see if this would correct it(thinking that its just
low thottle pressure). Anyway, is the throttle pressure
adjustable on this trans and also can the idle be
turned up without a hassel. I checked the trans
fluid level in N when it was warm...... also forgot
to mention that the trans only does this warm. I
bought this veh a couple of months back but didnt
see this issue before.... I dont think it was there
Thanks

Raf..

Talked to Scott

He said that tranny has 3 speed sensors, one of them might be bad...does it turn on the check engine light??

Don, no it doesnt turn on the light

Jeep uses 2 differnet trans in those if it is the 45rfe they had some problems with the seal in the pump where the filter goes in they would leak and you would get air pockets they also had a run of bad cooler line filters also that would cause engagment problems. Both filters are in the pan the other trans is a 42rle it has only 1 filter and I have seen a few with problems with the o-ring on the filter.

Thanks, now I have to determine which trans I have

Dusturbd, from what I read, the 42rle has the trans
cooler in front of the rad and the 45 does not. Is
there anything else that I can see that tells me
which trans is which
thanks

the pan on a 45rfe has a kickout on the right front kinda like a 727

Thanks for the info... some day I might learn transmissions,
he!! I'm just now getting my 727 figured out... LOL

Re: Trans Question on my Liberty - 12/17/08 03:48 AM

Very simple....

42RLE is Gas engine
45RFE is Diesel engine

There are 2 variants of the 42RLE in `06 depending on which way it was ordered...One with Variable line pressure and one without

Find someone else to talk to...BOTH the RFE and RLE have only TWO (input and output) speed sensors.

Raff...to answer a couple of your questions...NO you can`t change the line pressure, NO you can`t change the idle speed

Has this had the fluid changed lately ?

I guess they made some changes I have a 45rfe here on the floor that came out of a 02 Lierty with a 3.7l v6 gas motor

If we were talking about a `02 that would be fine......we aren`t, this is about a `06
RFE was the only auto available on a `02 KJ
On a `06 it is the way I posted.

I dont think so.... I bought this 06 used a couple
of months ago but havent driven it much(I was out
west with my other ride, wife's truck)I did see that
you should use 1 type of fluid only otherwise it
could/can have issues. Since you say the idle and
trans are a fixed condition(cant be changed) how
do I get the idle up a couple hundred revs.. is this
all in the computer, if so, do I get it re-flashed
and the same with the trans. This is under warrenty
but I would prefer to correct it before it really
be comes a major problem
thanks

Re: Trans Question on my Liberty - 12/17/08 03:56 PM

Mike here is some info

For the 2006 model year there will be two versions of the 42RLE transmission. The new
variant (variable line pressure - VLP) of the 42RLE transmission, has a new case, valve
body and a variable force style solenoid (pressure control solenoid). The solenoid is duty
cycle controlled by the TCM to vent the unnecessary line pressure supplied by the oil
pump back to the sump. The system also contains a line pressure sensor, the line
pressure sensor is a direct input to the TCM. The line pressure solenoid regulates the
transmission line pressure and completes the feedback loop to the TCM. The TCM
determines desired line pressure based on current gear and engine torque to satisfy road
load conditions (similar to the 545RFE transmission).
2006 vehicles could be built with either variant. The new transmission can be identified by
the sales code of DGV or the new variable line pressure harness connect

how many miles are on this vehicle also give me the vin And i can telkl you which unit is in you vehicle

chat at ya later Ryan and Jim

Re: Trans Question on my Liberty - 12/17/08 04:40 PM

here is what you have

DGBS All 4-Speed Automatic Transmissions
DG6 4-Spd. Automatic 42RLE Transmission
DHAP Lock-Up Torque Converter
sales code build
*B5 -D5 DG6 EKG NAA PB8 RSA 28X 4VL
non vlp system

Re: Trans Question on my Liberty - 12/17/08 05:11 PM

So, I have the non-VLP unit.... is there something
that can can be checked to correct this flair condition
coming to a stop. If I do come to a complete stop
and sit for a moment it will be in low and its fine.
I was just thinking it was a line pressure thing
but I could/most likely be wrong. Or should I just
take it back to the dealer

Re: Trans Question on my Liberty - 12/17/08 05:22 PM

Is this thing on ???
Since my opinion dosen`t seem to count, i`ll throw this last thing out.

Raff
Since you are unsure of the trans history, a couple of things...Has the battery been dead or disconnected lately? as this will clear the learned CVI values

At a minimum, the first thing you need to do is get somebody to do a Quicklearn on it, this will reset the clutch volume indexes (CVI), if you do, have them record the before and after, On the off chance there is an internal issue this will help in diagnosis
As I said before, you can not change the idle speed, it is dictated by the PCM and even if you manage to physically open the throttle blades it will then set a "target idle not reached" DTC

Rick, no the battery hasnt beedn disconnected or
dead. What is the idle speed for these, mineis
(on the tack) 475-500 in gear. If I let off of the
brakes on a level road at idle it doesnt move forward
at all, to me this is a touch to low(idle) which
made me think of line pressure on the trans issue.
Also what is this Quicklearn thing(no clue here),
is this a DRB thing

Re: Trans Question on my Liberty - 12/17/08 05:44 PM

Mike get ahold of me this weekend the drb III replacement is a star scan that manufacturing and service use now for MY 2004 to present. It sounds like it is doing what is called a 2 -1 bump stop. as far as quick learn is concerned if the battery hasn't been disconnected or dead, The cvi's (clutch volouim Index) are always updating everytime the the trans shifts thru all upshifting and down shifts events. this is based on time ver's pressure switch closing time.

I am in St. Louis right now will be home friday night. good luck Jim and Ryan
