How big of a tire on 69 b-body? - 09/26/13 06:30 PM

I have a customer that wants to put a drag radial in a stock wheel well with a 15" rim.

We are looking at a M/T 325/50/15 on a 15x10 rim with a 4 1/2" backspacing.

Has anyone tried this with good results??

You need 5-1/2 bs on a 10" rim

Disclaimer: b-body "Plymouth" ... Dodges seem to be able to have less bs.

Plymouth or Dodge ? You can get more tire in a Dodge than a Plymouth.

I know you can fit a 295/65/15 on a Dodge. 4.5 backspacing. 8" wheel. They look great and I will probably go with them on my Bee eventually...

Mine is a 70 not a 69 but these are 17x9.5 with 5.5 backspace. Tires are 275-60-17, 9 3/4" across the tread and 29.98 tall. That's as big as I can get in a Plymouth wheel well. There is also a 3/4" solid steel spacer in front of the leaf spring perch to push the rear back to add clearance at the front of the 1/4 panels.

Yeah, '69 Plymouths will have the same issue at the front of the wheelwell. Without moving the axle or trimming the front lip the tallest tire that will fit is around 28".

I tried 315/50R15 on my 70 RR but they rubbed. Went back to 275/60R15 and they clear ok. Wheels are 10" with 5 1/2" backspace and the tyres are centred in the wheel well.

i didn't think you could fit any tires that big under a b-body without modification...interesting.

on a 68-70 plymouth b-body you can go with a 15" diameter, 10" wide wheel with a 275/60/15 tire? i have 15" diameter, 8" wide wheel with the same size tire. i wasn't sure of the backspacing, but it is good to know that 5 1/2" is good for a 10" wide wheel. what would be good backspacing for an 8" wheel? 4 1/2"?

what is the proper backspacing for the front tires? i would like to put 15" diameter 7" wide wheel. i was hoping to use regular wheels in the front and reversed in the back, for a nostalgic look.

rear:

would 3 5/8" backspace be too much in the front on a 15" x 7" wheel?

Thanks everyone - With a little nudge, he has decided on a 275/60/15 on a 15x8 rim with 4.5" backspacing!

I have 295/50/15 tires on my 70 Charger, the rims are 15x10,with a 5 inch backspaceing. 68-70 Chargers have the biggest wheel wells of all the b bodies.

Same here. Hard to tell in the picture but there is some 295's under there.

Thanks for the link. I am wondering whether to order my wheels and tires online and take my chances, or buy them at a distributor. It seems like a wise move to fit them first, to make sure there aren't any issues with rubbing.

295s in the rear would be awesome, I didn't know that some b-bodies had a different size wheel openings...
