A100 Vans - 09/19/13 05:45 AM

Can someone fill me in on what to look for on a100's. Any problem areas, handling, and any other general info one would want to know before buying one. Also what should someone expect to pay for a running driving project? Thanks.

1. Rust! its a unibody with very few patch panels available. Look at the roof rails, the floors (especially in front where they installed a rubber floor mat), and along the bottom of the body.

2. Body damage. See No.1 unless you are a body wiz.

3. Wiring. 40+ year old wiring and a cheap car = hack fixes. No replacement harnesses available.

4. Complete and all parts there. Mostly dirt simple mechanicals, but a few items are hard to find. Steering boxes, one tie rod end, Ball and trunion driveshaft, gas tank. It's often easier to find a parts van than to track down all the little missing stuff.

Head over to vintage-vans for more info, there is also a Yahoo A-100 group.

They are almost all manual steering, all manual drum brake, very rare A/C. All are either /6 (170 or 225) or small block (273 or 318), either 3 speed on the tree or 3 speed auto (all 727) on the dash.
Minor differences between 64-66 and 67-70, mainly safety.

Figure out what drivetrain you want and what body style.
Here's a decent allpar article and a wiki article covering the basics.

Thanks for the links and info. I will check them out. I knew someone on here built one a couple years ago, was that you rod? I am a body/paint man by trade so that part doesn't bother me. Nice to know they don't make repro parts before I move forward.

Did a quick freshen on a 108 panel, have 2 other projects in limbo; a 68 window 8-door 100 and a 66 panel 100.
I've got a thread in the Member Projects & Survivor Pictures section outlining them titled
"Got myself an A100!"

There is a sub-section on the sweptline truck forum.
Jalopnik has a contributor building one.
Restoration Specialties has most of the rubber seals, and our own Detroit Muscle Technologies
has some gaskets.

Does anyone reproduce the wing wing gasket yet.

2 styles, early and late. The difference is the upper pivot point.
REstoration Specialties was supposed to finish theirs a year or 2 back. Hasn't happened yet.
There is Karr Rubber in LA that has one, but the quality is reported as poor or good (?).

Here's a thread on them...
