how do you bench test an alternator? (in baby steps for an amateur) - thanks!

Most auto parts stores will test it for free

A properly functioning alternator has a magnetic pull. You could start the engine and place a large screwdriver/prybay at the back of the alternator at the very center where the bearing is pressed in. If the alternator is working, it will try to pull the screwdriver toward it.
